Thinking on a small pack for matches. Really only need room for ammo, mags, brass, kestrel, water, and a small tool kit. Kestrel and a mag could go on a belt. Only larger item might be a compact tripod, but I really haven't used one much yet.

Anyone else downsized with good success?

I can vouch for Maxpedition quality. I've had a number of their products and they have all performed flawlessly. Worst failure was a cord lock on a Thermite drop leg possibles bag. More to the point I have abused several of their bags to the "max". In one case having one of their laptop cases fall off my ATV on a gravel road going 30 MPH. Laptop was fine and the bag was just dirty. They're a little pricey, but you and it down to your grand kids.

I carry around a Maxpedition Versipack Jumbo LEO version to some places where I can't conceal carry. Used that as a "Go Bag" in Iraq for years. Surprising how much "stuff" one can fit in there. The Jumbo LEO bag appears to be discontinued....too bad as it was the perfect Go Bag IMO.

I've used the bigger "Gearslinger" packs before too....but I was hauling more gear and equipment to the roofs in those years. I think I have a pic of my Gearslinger bag.

One of the Maxpedition Gearslinger or Versipack choices will work really well. I know a number of guys that just use a Jumbo Versipack and I personally love my Sitka Gearslinger, but they have so many choices in so many sizes and styles that you should be able to find something that you like. They are pretty feature packed for the money and it will not fall apart on you.
