I recently bought a Remington 700SPS chambered in 6.8 Rem SPC for $500. It's not really the caliber I wanted but it came with what looks like a HS Prec. aluminum bedded stock. So I figured that the stock and action is worth the price. My theory was that I could rechamber it and be good to go. Is there any caliber that uses the same bolt face dia.? What caliber should I change it to? I would like something that doesn't kick like a mule and cheap so shoot. I already own a .308, 22-250AI, and an AR15 in .223. I do reload for all of these so far. Any opinions on what to do?

Re: Tell me if I screwed up

are you wanting to rechamber or rebarrel? there is no other cartridge in .277 on that bolt face that you could rechamber to that i am aware of. if you want to rebarrel, the possibilities are numerous. i would shoot the barrel as is for a while until you are ready to rebarrel and then go with a 6mm,6.5mm, or 7mm of your choice and build it to shoot the heavies. your bolt face will have to be opened up and a sako or ar type extractor installed o believe.

Shoot it. The load possibilities are endless. Its a new caliber enjoy. If you decide to rebarrel, most any competent gunsmith can open the bolt face from .422" to .473". With or without changing extractor that is generally your choice. Though the remington extractors are not known for their reliability. As far as a new cartridge .260rem and .284win seem to be very popular among the f-class and tac shooters, and both have very good varmint bullet possibilities. Though the mag box may need to be changed if it is equipped with a spacer as found in the .223rem 700's.

yep; plenty of cheap ammo. Shoot the hell out of it.

I agree with the above sentiments:

Shoot it some, see how you like it. If it's still not your taste, any of the PPC rounds will go in it without a problem, a 22 PPC would make a good varmint rifle.

Opening the bolt face is easy enough, or meander to one of the BR forums and offer to trade out someone with a 473 bolt for a 422 bolt since they're more likely to want a 422 bolt face with the PPC's
