Temp test: AR Comp vs. Varget (308 Win.) + 223 Rem

Re: Temp test: AR Comp vs. Varget (308 Win.) + 223 Rem

I use hornady 150 gr bt with H4895 for my garand that shoots as well as factory ammo (federal amer eagle for garand). I bet their 55gr bt would get you there if you found a powder your gun likes (mine does well with reloader 15) although i am loading 70 gr loaded mag length and shooting 0.6 moa.

Are you crimping? I do not crimp even for my m1 - as i cannot trim consistently enough to crimp comsistent. +/- 2 mil trimming. Crimping is more important for MGs. I have not had problems with umcrimped ammo - u just need to use quality bullets so the case tension is there.

No crimp...

These aren't match loads, I've got the 70 VLD and 77 SMK running great for that. I probably would just shrugged it off as cheap bullets if the UMC ammo didn't shoot so well.

Komby: I get good accuracy in my 18" stealth using surplus BLC (its old) and 55g bulk cannelure bullets. Usually put 5 into 1"-1.5" at 100 yards.

Re: Temp test: AR Comp vs. Varget (308 Win.) + 223 Rem

I guess the point i wanted to make was hornady 150 gr bt gets me under 2 moa in my garand. You should try the 55 gr bt from hornady. They run decently cheap when bought in bulk.

Alliant says AR-Comp is a slightly faster version of RL-15: HERE

Re: Temp test: AR Comp vs. Varget (308 Win.) + 223 Rem

I ended up settling on Benchmark for the 55 gr. bullets.

AR Comp has about the same burn rate as H4895.

I don't shoot the 175 SMK... but, data is available from Alliant for it.

Re: Temp test: AR Comp vs. Varget (308 Win.) + 223 Rem

bought some AR-Comp and tried it with 77 grain Nosler CC. I started at 22.0 and ended at 23.4.

Velocity is as follows out of a 1-8 18" barrel

22.0 2617
22.2 2649
22.4 2728
22.6 2682
22.8 2716
23.0 2748
23.2 2718
23.4 2773

Well, I tested AR Comp with Hornady 55 gr. FMJ and Remington UMC 55 gr. FMJ. Velocities weren't great and accuracy was terrible (~3 MOAish). Remington 55 gr. UMC ammo shoots amazingly well though... But the Winchester and Federal ball ammo doesn't.

Still searching for a load that is at least as good as the UMC ammo. Didn't have have much luck with H335.
try 26.5 w748

I know its posted on alliants site...but what are you guys loading for 175 smk's and 178 amax's? Ive shot those recommended loads and they seem a little slow.

Go with the recommended loads. You can creep above the max if you want, but be very careful and look for pressure signs on every round until you get one that shows the signs.

The reason why they seem low is because the burn rate is faster than powders like varget.
