How well does the Terrapin work on flat ground on man sized targets? Im tired of not having a rangefinder that will not pickup man-sized targets or deer without a decent background. I have tried Zeiss and Swaro and wasn't pleased. Most shooters I've seen here at least have some hills and backdrops on their targets. Here where I shoot we can reach 1700-2500 yds with no elevation change. The Ziess and Swaro seem to die off after about 600 yds.

I use mine all the time on flat ground with no back stop ranging steel targets from 2/3 scale to full scale IPSC type targets. Have easily ranged out to 1,000 yards. The only limitation I see is the 5x mag which makes a smallish target a little tough to see/stay on at extended ranges. I've ranged larger objects like silos, hill sides, and tree lines, etc...out to 2500+.

It will outrange your Zeiss and Swaro and work better on smaller targets as the beam divergence is smaller than those two.

As mentioned above, the main issue will be holding the Terrapin still enough on a smaller target at longer range to get a consistent reading. A tripod would do the trick. My one complaint about it is its size and ergonomics. It is big and boxy. It is much easier for me to hold my Leica steady while getting a reading. I have a tough time finding the button sometimes as well. But if your concern is with rangefinding only... it is the best out there (apart from the more expensive Vectronix units).

We use ours all thine time non flat grounds and they will reach no problem.I use them surveying as well and we hit 9" pipeline marker circles at 1000 yds easy. They are small but foes great. I range my small steel farther with never any trouble. You will not regret one.

I'll put out this way, if the Vectronix won't do it. Nothing else will
