Re: Thats right, he doing 72 in a 55 zone

Someday soon I'll be the guy in the right front seat . . .

Re: Thats right, he doing 72 in a 55 zone

Hate to shoot down your hopes and dreams, but Phoenix is planning big job cuts this year. They won't be taking on officers any time soon, much less transitioning veteran officers to the air unit. And the current air unit pilots sure aren't going anywhere. They like their jobs.

Aye, if you let go with both hands a helo wouldn't fly by itself. And if absolutely necessary, for a radio or such, it's better to let go of the collective. If you were in the left seat as PIC, you'd need to reach across yourself to work anything on the center console. So most helicopter pilots sit on the right side. If there are 2 control seats, there's 2 sets of everything.

ETA: Notice in the photo above, there's no collective for the left seat.

Any Heliochoppter I've been in (a few) the pilot sits on the right seat.

But then I noticed where you are located, and realize that it all makes sense now. Ya'll fly on the wrong side of the sky, too.

Re: Thats right, he doing 72 in a 55 zone

Where you sit can depend on the model of the heli as well. The S300CBi mandates solo flight from the left seat due to balance issues as a result of where the fuel tank is located, IIRC. So each is different. Larger helis may not have this issue as much, and you CAN put the friction lock on the collective enough to let you let go, then stabilize the cyclic with your left hand while you use your right hand to mess with comm gear and instruments, etc.

That being said, in general: fixed wing = left seat, rotory = right seat. In the pic above, the TFO may be the gentleman in the left, or it could just be another empty seat for a body to fill.

Also, I'm not necessarily referring to a police heli. Any heli will do. I was merely stating that someday I'll be flying PIC in the right seat of a heli. An MD500E or MD530F would be nice, but I'd settle for any number of single or twin turbine birds (Bell 206, 407, 212, 412, BK117, EC-135, EC-145, etc. etc.). I'm not picky.

And LOL at the above comment regarding flying on the "wrong" side of the sky, haha!

Re: Thats right, he doing 72 in a 55 zone

I wouldn't recommend any of the MD series if you plan on flying in Phoenix. After about 20 minutes in the sun, it's like sitting under a magnifying glass. It gets friggin hot. Stick with with an Agusta, or the AStar. Very nice for flying in the Valley.

So how'd you like the ride along?

I asked the PHX guys about one in their A109, but was told I'd have to have a REAL good reason for me to get up in it. I wouldn't turn the chance down in a million years, so I'm thinking of drafting up a letter and seeing what I can do.

As for the MD series, we'd have to see.

They're great birds, but I have heard they can be warm. Granted, if I DID get a job flying heli's, chances are I probably wouldn't be doing it here, since you've got to be willing to "travel" a bit when you first get started if you want a job. They do ride with the doors off in the summer up here, though.

AStar's, Agusta, Bell, etc., if they've got a rotor up top and out back that work like they're supposed to, then they're all nice, far as I'm concerned!

Re: Thats right, he doing 72 in a 55 zone

The ride alongs are a lot of fun. My dad's their chief instructor pilot :p

Think my favorite one would have been New Years 2007, we went up about 1 am. Saw some Camaro hauling ass through a park. Gary hit him with the NightSun, and the guy pulled over and stopped, like it was a cruiser behind him. Just turned it off and flew away. It was pretty funny.

Re: Thats right, he doing 72 in a 55 zone

The guy on the left is the TFO...The collective has been removed. The PIC typically is on the right, but it doesn't take much to get used to working stuff from both sides, nor is it a hard and fast rule. I often fly with my co-pilots on the right so we don't get used to one side.
