Well I am a little new to the Long Range/Precision Rifle game but would like to put together a nice starter rifle.

I noticed a Steyr SSB in my price range at a local shop, what are your thaughts on this rifle ? I have shot there SSG-69 which I loved, this version is alittle differant I don't see it on there sight anymore either ?

It has the prohunter stock, 20" hammer forged barrel, and tactical bolt handle instead of the old butter knife style. The reason I ask is I absoultely love my regular pro-hunter and this would be a nice addition to it.

Thanks for all the advice, in advance.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

Mannlicher Pro Hunters are a nice rifles, but would recommend getting stainless version (Mountain stainless or stainless), if available for corrosion resistance.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

Steyr makes a nice rifle, but I wouldn't recommend one as s starter rifle platform for getting into long-range/precision rifle shooting just because of the difficulty in obtaining aftermarket parts, accessories, stocks, etc., and gunsmithing work.

If you want a 20" barreled 308 as a starter, I recommend the Remington 700 SPS Tactical. 20" heavy barrel (now available in a factory threaded 5/8x24 model if you want it), sub-MOA capable out of the box with proper ammo and shooter, and a varitable TON of aftermarket support. If you want to do a major upgrade later, the 700 receiver is a good building block which is really where the Steyr loses some mileage IMO. Not a lot of folks are working over the Steyr actions whereas the Remington 700 action has been the cornerstone of custom builds for decades.

You can get a NIB 700 SPS Tactical for $550 or so.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

The couple I have handled seemed very nice, but I m with ORD. You could probably do better for a starter rifle considering parts and smiths.

My sps easily shot under a minute, especially with good ammunition. Check out savage too; all of mine have been great shooters. With a bit of work and cash any of these rifles can shoot very well.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

Thanks for the info, guys.

I had already looked at the SPS Tactical as several of the people buy them and as the afford replace parts, to get a better rifle. Selling these guns as well every time we sell one thats the results we hear back from customers. Which is another reason I want to learn the art of long range rifle work, to better have an understanding when customers come in wanting to do/upgrade.

I didn't want to build up the Styer, just use it as a base to learn with now while I build up the one I will eventually learn with and attend schools. I can get one through work alot cheaper than the one I looked at, but it was nice to see it and man was it quality as every Styer I have handled. Just wondered how they are on accuracy, mine that I have now is consistantly under an 1" at 100yds with lightwieght barrel so I expect at least that or better which is good enough for now to start with. If I didn't like long range shooting I figured it would be a nice new compact rifle to go along with the fullsize I have now in the collection.

one of the few reasons I was discouraged fromt eh remington is its a 1/12 twist rate not a 1/10, but should i let this be a deal killer ?

Keep the advice flowing, thanks again guys.

BTW before somebody I asks, I plan on runing a USO ST-10 with Mil/Mil adjustments.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

Well just checked Remingtons website, There new Tactical model that is already threaded is a 1/10, which is very tempting. going to make some calls to see if one of the distributers can get there hands on it.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

Model 700™ SPS™ Tactical AAC®-SD™ is a nice rifle as well.

I don't think 1 in 12" twist should be a deal breaker for you, especially if you have a longer barrel, stabilizing bullet should not be an issue. Sendero 700s are accurate and have longer barrels. Or get XCR, with stainless steel barreled action.

Now if you want a really nice Remington with great accuracy, reliability, and which will hold it's value...get a 40-X series rifle.

The AAC is the one that is 1/10 and threaded for supressor which is very tempting.

The regular tactical is 1/12 on a 20" barrel which makes me kinda nervous.

The Steyr is a 1/10 20" and feels like a glove.

I'm really leaning towards the Steyr, then build a rifle as I learn.

You may never need to. If it's like the SSG the barrel is chrome lined and has an expected life of over 10,000 rounds... But then again, there are some hard-core shooters around here that will shoot that many in less than a year!

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

i am from the country of origin of these rifles, everyone and his father has a steyr here.
its kind of a patriotic rifle to have here.
whilst usually they are very accurate, there have been reports that something in the QC department has been changed recently and now every 10th or so steyr pro hunter rifle doesnt really meet the expectations, and has to be returned.
a gunshop owner near my place that caters mostly to hunters, stopped recommending them , since he was annoyed with those he had to return. he rather recommends tikkas n sakos now.

that beeing said, i think the steyr pro hunter models are excellent rifles for hunting, but the thin barrels and the small forend of the stock, like on most hunting rigs, are not ideal for Long range and sniping. steyr barrels are indeed quite durable due to the hammerforging and chrome.
a SSG 69, or ssg 04a1 would certainly be better for that purpose, yet also more expensive

maybe testshoot it if you can

The model Im looking at only has the Pro-Hunter Stock everything else is differant, Bolt is an enlarged Tactical bolt handle and a Heavy wieght countour barrel.

Re: Thaughts on Steyr Rifle.

Sounds like you narrowed it down to Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD and Steyr ProHunter.

Which Prohunter is it? Regular, Stainless, Mountain, or Mountain Stainless?

Note that Remington X-Mark Pro trigger is not completely smooth, but okay, a little heavy at 3.5 pounds pull but adjustable.

Not mine, but from the sound of it, I am guessing it is the SBS Prohunter heavy barrel like this one:
