It reminds me a bit of Greg Bear's The Forge of God, a novel length end-of-the-world story that also adheres to known physics.
 
- and going beyond that, like all of the best science fiction, this story is a powerful sort of allegory about the most important, fundamental aspects of our human condition. Damn... damn... damn.
