The Constitution IS a living document and the framers intended it that way. They knew that the world would change... it was the Age of Enlightenment after all... and change was accelerating every year.
But they were smart! They figured out that changing it needed to have the highest bar... most difficult process possible. So it could not be changed on a whim. So the Amendment process required huge margins and ratifications to ensure that it did not happen due to fads or short-term trends. It was the slowest pendulum in the clock. But it can be changed any time... and, honestly, to say virtually anything!
However it CAN'T be changed by radical judges, state governors, socialist mayors, meddling bureaucrats... need I go on.
This is why the left has been so radically focused, for decades, on the SCOTUS and on appointing activist, leftist judges. Who want to interpret the Constitution in novel ways. Which is how you change it without changing it. If your Supremes, for example, decide that healthcare is a civil right described in the Constitution under, say, the pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness... then it has the effect of a Constitutional Amendment that guarantees healthcare.
This is why the violence and freakouts over Consitutionalist or Foundationalist justices and judges who look at what the Constitution says, not what the 'feel' is right. This is what is at stake in 2020... Orange Man will get at least 2 more SCOTUS picks in theory. RBG (if she is not dead already) and Thomas and maybe even another. Along with appointing almost all of the Federal judiciary. This will prevent the undermining of the Constitution for a generation or two... including changes to voting. Taxation. Immigration. Education. firearms ownership... All the things that the left are dying to use to destroy the Constitution and our republic. This was a strategy that was outlined by leftist academics back in the 1960's. It's why the court fights started to get bad in the '70s... why 'Roe V. Wade' is not about women's rights... but is about galvanizing women to vote for activist -- not constitutionalist -- judges through the representatives, senators and Presidents (and governors, etc) they elect.
And they have a strategy to do it. Fabian Socialism is what they have practiced for 125 years... Just keep pushing the agenda. Get the camel's nose under the tent. And keep pushing. You lose... you push again. You lose, you push again. You lose, you push again. You win, you shout "We have a mandate... the people have spoken..." And move onto the next thing. Get gay Civil Unions... Demand gay Marriage. Get gay marriage, demand gay-awareness education in schools. Get gay-awareness education in schools, demand sex changes. Get those... demand that Children can have them... t's been a well-orchestrated strategy if incrementalism. Someone called it 'nudging.'
So use this to Take education over. Take courts over. Take the bureaucracy over. Take the media over. Take the health system over. Take elder care and daycare over. Take the economy over. Take the means of production and distribution over. Not all at once. That was Obama's mistake/ He went a bridge too far and now that is the Socialists/communists' current mistake. People aren't ready to have it pushed on them... But once a couple of generations of kids have been conditioned and brainwashed and exposed to revisionism and indictrination... it will all be easy. It's a 200 year thing... but gradually they will erode it away.
As I have said... watch Part 1 of Ken Burns Prohibition. See how the 'progressives' who foisted Prohibition on America spent 100 years marshalling resources and using every crisis as an opportunity to push the agenda (sound familiar?). And that modification to our "Living Breathing Document" worked out well, didn't it? But the progressives... the "Dry's" did it. They pulled it off. They created the playbook... and did it by trying to be busybody do-gooders and foist their minority views on a majority nation. Which is not what we are about. We are about protecting the minority view, not turning it into a government-enforced mandate... no matter what 'do gooders' want.
So we do have a living breathing document. Unfortunately, anything that lives and breathes can be killed. And that is what the enemies of our Constitution and Republic have wanted to do since the whole Marxist, Socialist, Progressive philosophy (quasi-religion) was foisted upon us in the 1880's or so. And not just by Marx... but by Americans... like Rapp and Ripley and Hershey... who just knew their ideas were good for us whether we liked them or not.
Fortunately, the Constitution also allows us to hold another convention... And having July 4 as independence day leaves 364 days on the calendar for a reboot day. Which is why the Second Amendment was added to our living, breathing document.
