So I happen to read an article over at Military Time's.
According to them the Marine Corps wants to close both MCRD's in order to build a new CO-ED camp.

Why do people have to fuck with tradition and heritage?

    I'll leave this here-

    I'll leave this here-
Navy consolidated their boot camps in California and Florida into their Great Lakes, IL location.

It can be done: good, bad, or indifferent.

You'll still have Marines that need "doc" to staple their head closed after playing football with a rock at Camp Wilson, 29 Palms.

    Just sayin.

It's called tradition, some things just need left alone.
I take it you didn't read the article?
The want coed feel good fine.
The next time some female Kills one of our beloved sand fleas while shes doing her nails, she can bury it and go to the funeral

Yes, I read the whole article from top to bottom. I understand and appreciate the USMC traditions. I dont understand your comment about a female recruits not liking sand fleas at Parris Island since female recruits have always trained there.

I agree with you: coed boot camp is dumb. Overall, things Shouldn't be changed because we need Marines to go forth, and destroy America's enemies. But, alas, Congress mandated this bullshit.

My brother is a Marine and I ate dirt/sand with 2/1 and 1/11 from 2004-2008 and did the fancy FMF pin thing on my chest. I can't tell anyone anything about Navy history, but I can tell them about USMC stuff because thats where I loved being.

    someone wants the real estate...
why would we, as marines, on owned property, want to sell???
No dog in this fight, other than to empathize with tradition and not wanting to fix what's not broken...

Weren't there a couple big pieces in the news a while back about ground and water contamination at Parris and Lejeune? Nasty carcinogenic stuff that would take like 100 years to clean up, IIRC. Gov paid out millions on the downlo and did some VA "presumptive service-connected disability" stuff for cancer diagnoses.
It'd probably be cheaper to build a new post and declare them Superfund sites or permanent impact areas. Maybe the Co-Ed thing is just to get the libs on board, keep their flapping pieholes shut, and sign the damn NDAA.

No problem at all with the co-ed deal. But...
    1. Training standards don't change and all problems with men and women of that age sleeping together have to be accepted. There is another option
    2. Fuck you. Be a quitter you little bitch

    Or
    1. Fuck you if you don't like how things are. Go join the Peace Corps.

I don't know... Some people say I'm an insensitive asshole. I just respond in-kind to stupid shit.

When I was down that way this summer, drove from Myrtle Beach to Hilton Head via 17 most of the way, I saw a sign for "Camp Davis" and it intrigued me.

Its at the southern end of the LeJeune complexes on your right as you travel south on 17.

    I looked it up.

It used to be a WWII anti-aircraft training base for the Army. The USMC bought or traded or whatever one govt agency does to obtain an asset of another govt agency from the Army.

I saw some stuff about the USMC looking in to using Camp Davis as "the" USMC boot camp location.

Article I read also recognized that closing PI would be taboo due to tradition.

Sounds like San Diego does not get the veneration PI endears and it possibly could be closed but PI seems to be just too much of the USMC psyche.

    Right now anyway.

    But.....

    That is likely to change.

We can not be reborn a new communist nation in "Year 1" if we still maintain our old traditions and history.

Id expect to hear the folding of the USMC into the Army as a new reconstituted "Peoples Liberation Army of the USA - PLUASA"

Navy used to have two OCSs. One in Pensacola for the Aviators, and Rhode Island for the rest. First round of BRAC in the 90s they closed RI and moved it all to P'cola. And after a bad hurricane trashed NAS P'cola in 2004, they moved it all to Rhode Island again.

With Cali seeming to be under one state of emergency or another, maybe the Marines need a place to focus on training, and not fires, mudslides, power outages, wackadoodle liberals....

    I can see it now.....

Well, I hope the plan on issuing actual birth control in addition the the BCs. I remember guys sneaking out during mess and maintenance week to hook up with 4th Bn WMs.

I just don't understand this kinder gentler shit. Will men get to take a time out because of cramps? How many will get pregnant during BWT (or whatever they call it today)

They are supposed to be training warriors not politically correct group huggers.

I had a DI tell me that the aluminum tube from a pop-up flare was actually a tampon insterer for WMs.

For anyone not familiar wirh the acronyms...

BCs = issued glasses called birth control because they're so ugly.

    WM = women marine

    BWT = Basic Warrior Training

Back in the day, that was Force Recon and SOTG's training play ground. People just didn't talk about it. In fact, you're the first person in probably 30 yrs, that I've heard even mention that area.

That runway was perfect for landing, and cramming guys into, an OV-10 Bronco for a low level, high angle drop into a LZ. Load up there, zip around for bit over the ocean, and then make a run into LZ Goose (or one of the other LZ's near the beach). Easy on fuel, support, and short enough to truck guys back to repeat the training.

I went through boot at Great Lakes in the winter of 1966; the weather sucked but training was a breeze. I transferred to USMC in 1967 and rode the night bus to Parris Island. It was best thing that ever happened to a young punk like me, but at the time I thought I had been dropped in hell. Leave PI and the USMC alone you PC morons.

There’s also another consideration as to why they are looking to close Parris Island...it’s literally sinking.

I believe the last report I read is that they loose almost 2” of ground per year...

Another reason why it would be a difficult sell to put them in one location is the amount of money San Diego makes off from MCRD graduations. Between flights, hotels, restaurants, and then all the parents buying anything with an EGA on MCRD, it definitely would be a topic that was brought up.

I will say, in my current job I have been apart of this restructure of entry level training and it’s been a wild and frustrating last couple of months...

Shit, this all reminds me of the shower scene in Starship Trooper.

I got off The Night Bus on PI in Feb 1966, as a Marine Corps Draftee. It least I didn't have myself to blame...

IMHO, no matter where they run it, Boot is Boot.

    COED?

    I dare them.

First off, it's the Marine CORPS (a military unit), not Corp (abbreviation for corporation). Holy shit, how in the living fuck am I the first to mention that? Are we really that kinder and gentler? The veins in my Gunnery Sergeant forehead start showing just on the sight of Corp being used in conjunction with our branch. This isn't even grammar nazi, this is the title of our fucking service. GTFO with that bullshit.

Second, it's long past due to consolidate all recruit training onto one location. Cost of MCRD San Diego alone has to be insane. Have you seen the cost of BAH for San Diego?

It's over a full grand above MCRD PISC rates, and when you assume a basic 2000 manpower of the base, well that's two million a month more expensive to operate in CA versus SC. Actual manpower there is likely much higher, I picked 2k out of thin air as a guess as to when I was based at PI in the 90s.

For those who have been to MCRD San Diego, you know there is absolutely no room for expansion. Not that Parris Island has any more room, but SD is already nut to butt. They have to travel to Pendleton for half their training, taking away training time for travel and again, additional cost as well as strain on the Drill Instructors having to be away from their own home.

For Parris Island, they have a fair bit of training capabilities and some room for expansion, but I can only imagine the increased housing footprint necessary to combine the training while not having everyone sleeping under one roof in one room. It's a multi billion dollar fuckery that is coming.

Leave SOCAL. Leave PI. Put all of it in NC at Lejeune, Sandy Run is a hell hole and absolutely would make for a sequestered training area. Even better, put that shit in Texas. As for the tradition of training at Parris Island? Marines haven't even been training there for half of their existence, it's just another piece of ground. Why does the Corps have "Camps" and the army has "Forts"? Because of our expeditionary mindset, and we're ready to close one and open another at any given moment. It's just dirt, we'll take more elsewhere...

Now to combining the training. Congress, as usual, stuck their noses where it didn't belong for the sake of feel good bullshit while dabbling with national security. Maybe I'm just old and stuck in my ways, but I and the rest of the Corps, male and female alike, have long believed boot camp isn't the time for cohesion of the sexes, it's the time to turn boys and girls into men and women. You can't do that nearly as effectively while training them together as you can while separating them into their own gender groups.

But for the love of fuck, correct the fucking title of this thread...
