I got a Mauser 98 large ring as a project.... and well.... decided to change her up a tad.....

Refinished the stock... textured the grip...

Had to cut a little so I could hold it with my left hand...

Had the action redone/and aftermarket barrel......

added some pieces... and well.... HERE SHE IS...

ohhh and she shoots VERY well.... but ONLY likes the expensive Black Hills 175...

Hope you guys like her...

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

nice rifle mate.
something about re-working an old military action appeals alot to me as well and the Mauser is an obvious platform to do this on.

Good to hear she shoots well!

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

Its wearing a Super Sniper 10X.

Thanks for the compliments.

I have to give a I have to give a plug for RANDY at R/D Precision. He did ALL of the refinishing on the barrled action and it looks VERY good in person.

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

I tried LOW rings... but due to the cheek piece and design of it... I had to go to Mediums....

It looks ALOT higer in the pic than it really is.... but its not too bad..

The LOWS made it to where I could not see in the scope without REALLY pressing my face into the stock...

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

I'm 99% sure thats a FA enterprises adjustable mauser stock.

The only reason i know is that i planned on doing the same build a year ago before midway no longer carried them...

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

Alderleet,

YOUR RIGHT... I tried to get another one about a month ago... but after calling EVERYONE.... it was a no go..

HOWEVER.... McMillan WILL put it in ANY stock they have if you want an adjustable stock...

Santo,

Its a .308... I used some Black Hills 175 Match... and its well under MOA at 100... No real measurement due to testing for function and did a quick sight in... but 5 shots were just a TAD over 1/2 inch...

I think if I slowed down... adjusted the trigger (WHICH IS NOW DONE) it would have done better to 1/2 inch or under..

All in all I am VERY pleased..

At 300 yards it was hitting a orange clay pigeon/skeet... sooo she is definately on target...

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

Thanks guys..... Its been fun messing with it. Now I look forward to just shooting it...

I am thinking about another build but this time a complete do it myself project... just havent fully decided...

I am leaning towards an AR10 build though...

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

mm128,

I have to say I really like the rifle and I'm wishing I could do some of the same things you've done with yours. I have a VZ-24 that I barreled in 7x57. That is my standard Long range rifle. shooting 168 Bergers, it will regularly print about 3" in decent wind <span style="color: #3333FF">{edit: @ 500}</span>. For those who don't believe you can true a Mauser action and get some serious accuracy I shot a .344 using Sierra 168 SMK's...@ 500. Wind totally dropped off, and that was a bit of luck getting them all in one touching hole.

However, as noted that was a bit of luck. Wind dropped off completely. I was already dialed in for 500.

But I do believe that is proof that a good Mauser can be trued quite well to shoot that good. The difference is a controlled round feed vs. a push round feed. There is no difference in accuracy if you feed either from a magazine. The only way you can beat that kind of accuracy is to single feed. And you probably won't even be able to see it unless you're shooting from a bench.

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

Sandwarrior,

Your right... They are VERY accurate... I honestly did NOT expect much from this rifle... I just wanted a good truck gun to sit in a case for the road... but when I took it out... I remember thinking... damn... did it really print on paper that well...

I did some function testing... and decided to shoot a 5 shot group... walked up to the target and said.... damn... guess this ones a shooter.

Good thing about the Mausers they are built like a TANK... and after market parts are EVERYWHERE and very cheap.

I think the match trigger was like $30.00.. and its a VERY nice trigger that would have cost over $100 or $200 if in a Remington action.

I am very please with rifle.. and will eventuall move it to a different stock.. but for now.. I just cant see messing around with it.

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

Powder Burns,

The stock was originally made by FA Enterprises... You can still see pics of them UNPAINTED on the web.... bad news is there are NO MORE available... FA quit making them about 2 years ago..

FA Enterprises are still in business.. but I have NOT been able to get ahold of them... I would LOVE a new stock...

They are FULLY adjustable.... and very sturdy...

The stock probably weighs in at about 5.5 pounds...

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

Good looking rifle. I have a Daly action project that I'm dropping into one of these stocks. The stocks come up on gunbroker or ebay every once in a while. I scored mine off of gunbroker a couple of months ago.

Couple of questions MM - did you find that the slot in the cheekpiece was way off center? Mine was so far off that I just removed the whole right side of the slot. And what action are you using? It looks like it might be a military action, and if so, just wondering how well the EGW base fit after the clip hump was ground off.

Re: The OLD.... to the more MODERN...

mm128,

They sure have a ton of stuff available for them. And a good smith can true one up pretty easily. meaning they don't have a bunch of quirks to them that every other rifle doesn't have. They also take a pretty wide range of cases. I've seen them take everything from .22-250/.250 Savage cases (and wildcats based on those) up to .300 and .338 WM. No ultra mags as of yet though.

My only qualm is trying to get a stock like yours. That's been the one difficult thing to get.

Jim Kobe, here in Bloomington MN., is my first suggestion.

He posts on here in the gunsmithing section if it's the same guy. I do believe it is.
