Few things irritate me more in a machine shop than a machine that pisses coolant all over the place.

$1,200.00 this past spring on new doors for the machine and less than 4 months later they were falling apart again. There's a sucker born every minute. Lesson learned. . .

$67.00 worth of 1/8 alum sheet from the local supplier and a few hours later:

Doggy doors for the chip cleanouts. This'll keep coolant from pissing on the floor.

6 month old replacement door straight from HAAS. Stress cracks on every bend and every hole looks like it was shot with a 308. Can we say Bullchit? The left side split in half!

Setting up to cut out the windows on the new AL skins:

    It fits! Woo hoo!

looks nice but tell me this, if for some reason you throw a part will those doors and that glass protect you ?

i know a kid at work that threw a billet in the lathe and the lathe had the glass that had the bars going threw it and if the billet had a little more steam it would have made it completely threw.

now granted mills and lathes are two different animals but just some food for though, and yes the kid that threw the billet was a jack ass

I appreciate what your saying and I did consider that to some degree when building these.

The original doors were made from .160" thick lexan heated up and bent at the facets. It had a steel frame on three sides. The sides overlapping the white fiberglass enclosure were left unsupported by the factory.

I went with 1/8 aluminum and 5/16" lexan for my windows.

Considering how little it took to destroy the OEM doors I have to think the 1/8 AL is going to last much longer and tolerate more impact than the lexan. The windows are much smaller in size than the original doors so I think they will tolerate a whack or two better also.

Additionally, I must consider that for a 100+ years there were millions of manual machines that offered little/no protection what so ever. We've still got lots of machinists running around in good health. Mistakes are made from time to time and I am just as guilty as anyone else. That being said if a part ever comes buzzing out of a vise and makes it through that door to my face it means there was a long series of bad decisions made prior to that event. If I set it up then I'm responsible.

I'll gladly take that risk if it means I only have to drag the mop bucket out once a week to give the floors a quick swab vs having to do it 3-4 times a day to avoid breaking a leg/hip on a waxed floor soaked in coolant.

Accepting responsibility for ones own actions---what a novel concept!
