Projecting power across the Open Ocean and is something completely different. In that theater, against Japanese navy is what I was getting at. This is not comparable to the defense of land locked Stalingrad.
Look at the map before you make assumptions. Like said Soviets would not need much in terms of naval power projection nor would they need long-range bombers or fighters.
Sakhalin is separated from Hokaido by 25mile strait , Russian Kuril islands are even closer, when they retook Sakhalin and Kuril islands they had fighters in the air over both (most were P63 Kingcobras). If it came to it , it wouldn't happen in a vacuum but with a WW2 continuing. Although the distance is similar to one between France and Britain , you would not be looking at the oriental reenactment of the Battle of Britain, with Japan running on fumes and Soviets at peak of their power
