So it is about time I bite the bullet and buy one. Looking for advice from those who are in the know.

My budget is $3,500.

My main priorities are image quality and battery life unless it can take AA batteries. Beyond that I really do not care if it has onboard recording, WiFi, Bluetooth or anything else.

It must be able to be used as a handheld unit as well as weapon mounted. Not sure if they make them but a clip on would be great.

No idea on magnification range but because it will be used to look for wildlife inside of 100 yards nothing too high of a magnification.

I will never hunt anything beyond 250 yards. Being able to locate, not identify, a large animal/person/car at 500 yards would be great.

Another option would be a handheld thermal and a decent NV scope.

Thanks

If you have facebook join this site it's the SH of thermal. 22k members and everything you can think of and stuff you can't.

High resolution (640) and $3,500 is going to be tough to accomplish with a thermal worth having. I'd suggest prolonging your purchase for the HALO unit at minimum. If you can accept the limitation with a 320 unit, and you could care less about engagements over 100 yards, I'd get the Flir PTS233. Otherwise, look at use Pulsar optics.

Hold on a bit, the PRG Anaconda TC-50 is being tested ... and might meet your requirements !

As a handheld it would be 1x ... (though the display might be on the small side, not sure yet)

As a clipon it would support up to 8x magnification on the day scope. You don't have to dial 8x on your day scope, you can dial 3x 4x whatever you like.

The TC-50 has a 1024x768 display which should bring the image quality up close to 640 level (even though it is a 384). As skyscrapin said, getting a 640 unit, that is also a clipon, is not in the cards.

Shown price is $3,500

:)
