Re: thinking about writing a book your thoughs
Fifteen years ago, my shooting mentor, Tom Dresner, and I set about to do the research and write the ultimate Heckler & Koch history and reference book. Tom already had many contacts at HK, both at Sterling in the U.S. and at Oberndorf in Germany, and he was an avid collector, enthusiast, shooter, instructor, etc. of all things HK. Tom was on the HK shooting team and was set to retire as a police Captain and take over the U.S. side of HK's International Training Division (until HK's European management killed ITD following an SUV rollover in Florida during an HK training course). I am fluent in German and have traveled and worked there quite extensively, and I had a keen interest in anything related to shooting. Well, for various reasons, the book never materialized, and instead, the project eventually transformed itself into his website we now know as
HKPro.com (Tom himself is HKPro). I provided Tom with some unique HK brochures and product data sheets featured on his website. I have been to HK in Chantilly and Oberndorf, gotten inside tours and fondled the samples in the Grey Rooms in both locations, and test-fired some HK products before they ever hit the mass market in the U.S. Years ago when I bought my first transferable MP5, Tom introduced me to Terry Dyer. I currently live and work in Dallas, Texas, and I can drive over and talk to Murray Urbach in Garland. I mention all this to point out I had/have access to HK and ancillary people, so trust me when I opine that your proposed research project and book would not likely be feasible. Finally, as an aside, renowned designer and former HK engineer Ernst Mauch is now in the midst of
ongoing antitrust litigation against HK.
