Thinking of a new build...

Hello all, I've realized my rifles so far are either too small of a caliber, or meant for only hunting, not very well with long range so I'm motivated to get something hopefully sooner or later...I'm torn between getting a Remington 700 something or other and building that up, or should I force myself to wait more and look into getting something like and Accuracy International AW?

Caliber preferably in .308 or anything that would be worth while to shoot, while still not really breaking the bank with ammo.

Thanks

Re: Thinking of a new build...

I would suggest you broaden your choices by checking out the Savage Arms home site Firearms/Browse Models options, and examining their offerings under the 'Actions Only' pages.

Their actions are both affordable and reliable, with many options, including both detachable magazines and single shot match/target rifle actions.

A full aftermarket selection of barrels, stocks, optics mounts, etc. are available for Savage firearms actions and components.

Re: Thinking of a new build...

Well, you have hunting rifles, you have small caliber (Varmint?) rifles, and your not happy with the one role rifle, so apparently you need a multi-role rifle? Is that what your saying?

Theres a big first step here...determining what you can afford and what role(s) you want this rifle to fill.

Ive never owned a Savage, but I think thier switch barrel capability and off-the-shelf components make for a good entry/intermediate level multi-role rifle with alot of versatility.

Give some thought on exactly what it is you want, and how much of what you want you can afford.

Re: Thinking of a new build...

I also say go the Savage route. You can pretty much modify them as much as you can a Remmy 700 now. The best part is that you can work on them yourself if your so inclined. You can get a model 10 or 110 that will shoot lights out. You will have great accuracy with the stock barrel so this will help you save a lot of money and invest in your optics. Just my .02 but this is the route I went and it worked out perfectly for me.

Re: Thinking of a new build...

Savage does not make the rifle I'd want, but they do come close.

The rifle I'd like would be a Long Action rifle with a Detachable Magazine, AccuStock, Accutrigger, and a 26" medium-to-varmint weight barrel chambered in .30-'06. Later down the road, an additional switchable barrel, same weight/contour/length, chambered in .280 Rem/7mm Rem Express.

Until that day, a factory 111FCNS would do, but the lighter weight 22" barrel would probably require some serious handloading to perform at distance.

Re: Thinking of a new build...

Ah, well I don't really know about having a multi-role rifle. What I do have are Benelli shotguns, a Benelli MR1, and a 7mm rem mag rifle. Pretty much only using the high caliber for hunting big game or some fun medium range coyote hunting. I was thinking about the Remington 700 so I may get the AICS stock. I guess the point of this rifle would just to be another "fun gun," for flash and shenanigans. To have a fancy rifle. I don't really know how big of an issue money really is myself even, haha, I will probably just start building it piece by piece till its done. Could take months, guess I'm just trying to see if this would be worth a wait and what not.

Thanks for the help so far

Re: Thinking of a new build...

I concur. A 'multi-role rifle' is, at best, a compromise; which by my definition does nothing especially well, and all things in a completely mediocre manner.

With your heart being set on an AICS stock (the knowing which would have saved many of us considerable time), I can now see why you are so set on an R700 action.

I envy you your commitment and ability to do this, and sincerely hope you do well and keep us posted.
