Not quite sure where though. I have 2 and a half years to finish my pipefitting apprenticeship. Once that is done I will be trasnferring my book out west. I was thinking oregon. What im looking for is a place in the hills or mountains. Close to a city where I can find work. But close to a place I can shoot far. Any ideas?

Re: Thinking of moving

If our gas pipeline goes through, high coin jobs for a few years and nothing like living in Alaska. If not, economy will tank like the 80s, probably worse. We are out of oil and cannot drill for more.

Good luck

Re: Thinking of moving

Seriously though, I don't put much stock into average temp, rainfall, and other random stats. I base livability on clothing. I'm curious to know how Alaska would actually rank in my little system.
What percentage of the year is the ideal dress for an average person (6'0, 185, moderate physical conditioning) comfortable wearing:

1) Jeans, long sleeves or light jacket (50-70 degrees with varying conditions of wind and humidity)
2) Shorts, t-shirt (70-95 wvc)
3) Parkas, Overalls, other cold weather gear (32-0 wvc)
4) Fuck it, I ain't going out there! (0 or below and poor conditions)

I would give Central IL something along the lines of:
35,30,30,5 respectively (+-2 in each given varying years, precipitation, and other conditions)

And I can already hear some of you crazy bastards bragging about how you hike 5 miles in 4 feet of snow to get the morning paper in nothing but your flip flops and boxer shorts...don't wanna hear it.

Re: Thinking of moving

I know this sounds childish, but when the wife and I considered moving, we considered a long list of factors and compared them to our current location. In no particular order, some of the bigger factors were:

1) The climate factor (listed above)
2) Population density/privacy
3) Cost of living/cost relative to #2
4) Job availablity vs. #3
5) Distance from friends/relatives
6) "Death" factors (regional natural disasters, extreme conditions, dangerous/venomous wildlife, crime, etc.)

Re: Thinking of moving

Check out employment opportunities in the Wyoming gas fields.

Haliburton is exploring all around Pinedale which is about 60 miles SE of Jackson Hole...

Doing some of this same thing myself right now. Looking at all of the things on the above list. Will be finishing my current program in a bit less than 2 years. Have a few areas in mind and also not limiting myself to the U.S. I think it might be a bit interesting to end up living in another country for a couple years.

No kids? Go to Taiwan for a few years. If you position yourself right you might be a fool to come back in a few years' time. Seriously. They already speak english by and large so you can take your time in learning Mandarin while you're there. There is and will be a crapload of capital headed there.
