There are quite a few 67-72 chevys sitting around rural eastern Colorado and western kansas that aren't all rusted out. That was what I wanted when I got my first sqaure body, but axle swaps were easier in the square bodies. Swap without moving spring pads between all k10-k30.
Back when Aero and some other trucking companies were going out of business. We cut down a lot of trucks and made them single axle for barrel racers and people pulling horse trailers. A 3406 pulls those little trailers like nothing, last a million miles and got 10-12 mpg when pulling their "big" trailers. And had a living quarters right on the truck. People were getting them for 20-30k. A lot are still using them 15 years later.
I don't care would still bomb down the road in one. All I wanna do is haul my dog around and go shoot guns in the desert.
That one I posted a pic of has the 4.0L gas they used in the 4runner and Tacomas forever, it's a really good motor. Better than the 3.5L and the turbo they have now for sure.

I've seen a few of those out here one guy has a lifted one. These people in my area are all richy rich Orange county types with fancy horse stuff. The old time Arizona cowboys drive 1980s ford trucks covered in shit and blowing smoke.
I would love either one of these! In fact my next rig will be very similar.
the SUV format is perfect for me. my 1st was a basic Isuzu rodeo the year they came out. stripped down basic. power steering,brakes,standard trans,AC,heater nothing else. can't find anything close now. my "new" '18 Nissan is over run with digital useless sensors,camera,power everything. not even a door or ignition key. has some sensor push button BS. how does any of this shit make sense or make a better vehicle?

But I was driving a V6 Toyota hills in 3rd gear overseas once and would get about 55 mpg all day long.
I drove one of the 4 cylinder 2.9 d4d hiluxs with a 14000 lb trailer load through foothills once and it did just fine unless the road got really steep.
I don't care if it accelerates fast or has much torque past the really slow speeds.
IIRC doesn't meet EPA Req's or safety standards.

I'm still on the hunt for a mid 90's Landcruiser. I love my FJ but want another Landcruiser. I do have the loaded full-size, really wish I could get a more basic full-size.
An old Land Cruiser would be nice.
Also the Chicken Tax is another Hilux hurdle but there is a loophole. If you can find one 25 years old in good shape it's fair game.
Getting an import registered and insured is the next hurdle. I almost pulled the trigger on an 80 series 4door pickup with a flatbed and turbo diesel. The titling process in Texas proved to be more than I was willing to deal with.
Toyota could import the bare bones version of the Hilux, sell it as a non-plateable OHV to get around a lot of the emissions and other import restrictions, and they would sell like hotcakes still. Think a Mahindra ROXOR that's even more bulletproof.
No AC, no airbags, no ABS, no radio (single DIN space for a two way radio though), no sensor bullshit, none of the fluff crap. Manual transmission, manual transfer case, manual hubs, manual windows, make it a dirt worthy OHV and we'd buy the hell out of them.
I'm thinking one of the ones I ran the desert with didn't even have power steering, but it did have lockers and could lug down and up steep wadis in 4L like it was nothing. I could haul a shit ton of steel 1/4 and 1/2 IPSC targets in the back of it as well, the bed was full of targets and stands long before it hit the bump stops.
To the earlier comment of cab space, the Taco is like the WH ballroom in roominess compared to the cab of a Hilux. Fatties need not apply.
I would love to have one for a beater here on my land or up in the mountains running old logging trails. Of course around here, we drive OHVs everywhere but the interstate anyhow.

Having driven them I don't know where those alleged 200 hp go, guessing to noise and vibration. Sure as shit don't get many as far as the wheels.200hp woot

Having had minimal experience with the US spec trucks, I do wonder what your domestic stuff is like if you think the shit heap that is the Hilux is an improvement... Haven't been good for decades
Remember Ford stopped building the Ranger here, because it was taking over first place. But they were still for sale across the ponds in any configuration you wanted. Full four door 2 bench seat, turbo Diesel, 5speed 4X4's were very popular. Ford said fuck the Americans but when pressure was so great to bring the ranger back, the POS they did allow the peasants to own was the size of a fucking F150 loaded with too much B/S. The game is rigged and the public is blind to that simple fact.
