Cops are not Mobile Crisis. They have superficial training for this kind of stuff. They are therefore kinda relegated to doing only that which they know might work. A mobile crisis psyche tech would arrive, no gun, and talk the guy down a totally different way by trying to bridge with him, trying to get to what s bothering him to place him in this state of being.
Officer McMillan did a great job of keeping the incident peaceful. He could have tazed the guy, he could have shot him, but he tied to get as personal as he knows. My bet is in the locker room or meeting rooms, he's all but the bro's, and dude's. For fucks sake, it's middle of got damn OC dude, you know what I mean bro?

The reality is that Cops are expected to be professional psychologists when they arrive on scenes like this.
There is a substantial amount of training for crisis intervention, thanks to the politicians dumping folks like this on the streets.
Apparently, it is more cost effective to let the Police and EMS handle this stuff, rather than addressing the actual mental health care required.
