Let’s talk for a second. I have known about this concept for sometime, as it was always my fathers motto that he drilled into my head.

“know what you know, and know what you don’t know, and never confuse the two. “

We have all met these types, in every aspect of life. At the gun range. The neck beard that can shoot his 270 a mile with open sights. We can apply it to politics. Especially communism and socialism. These people have no concept of actual economic realities. Basically, it comes down to people who are overconfident in their understanding and abilities but yet underperform in their actual knowledge and execution of tasks. This study was done in 1999 and pretty much made it an official scientific paper on the concept that has been around since the dawn of man.

so please read this quick article and now you will know and understand the Dunning – Kruger effect.

Yes I am a nerd. And yes I play stupid really well.

And discuss knowing what you don’t know.

it makes sense. the graph is very interesting and I've seen similar floating around IG posts. it shows time involved in a skill plotted against realized knowledge level and the curve looks just about the same.

take any hobby or skill - and find the people that have been doing it for a few months. A lot think they know everything. well, compared to their buddies that don't do the same hobby, they probably do know quite a bit.

however, once they get more involved with the hobby (or skill or whatever) and start surrounding themselves with other people in the field. The person SHOULD realize they don't know squat. then as time goes on, then the actual knowledge begins to be accumulated.

i've felt it myself with shooting/guns. i would build up false confidence in my knowledge because when I talk to non-gun people I seem like i know everything. then when I'm around people that have been shooting or working with guns way longer than me, i realize I know nothing

Person A - will recognize this trend and humble themselves and continue to learn
Person B - will remain cocky and think they know everything which eventually just holds them back from really learning.

Now apply it to political leaders. Who are the people that get promoted? The extremely confident. But yet we understand that they are the ones that don’t know what they don’t know LOL. I love that it now has a name Dunning-Kruger. As you can apply it to anybody that is in over their head. Metacognitive. Thinking about thinking. And understanding that you don’t know anything. LOL This is me to a T.

I get what you're getting at here, but in my field, the front matter is usually a wall of bullshit (technically not bullshit, but some wild assumptions which may or may not turn out to be bullshit under the scrutiny of the scientific method).

Confidence is key here, because some of the folks you're talking to on the starting line of a big project do know a thing or two about what time it is, far moreso than myself, typically.

That combination of ignorance, confidence, and enthusiasm has gotten me into some shit I wasn't sure I could solve, but eventually did figure it out. I choose, now, to state that ahead of time. "I don't know much about this industry, but I'll know a shitload in a little bit. I'm the right choice here. Just look at what I've done in all these other industries I didn't know shit about."

Hard to tell with political types if they'll be able to pull a Trump or not, and actually get some stuff done. Trump being a prime example of someone who didn't know shit about politics figuring it out and mopping the floor with his opponents.

In most things, my best indicator is gonna be past actions, anything that gives insight into what type of dude we're dealing with, and what my gut says. Beto, for example, might know a thing or two about politics, but his past actions indicate communism, and my gut says he shouldn't be here. Unfortunately, the same can be said for Lyin' Ted Cruz, but I would figure Ted would vote the right way most of the time, whereas Beto would likely never vote the right way.

Since long before it had a name/title, I have been saying (and have said it here a number of times if anyone cares to look) that "I know what I don't know".

I don't profess to be a doctorate of anything. I have a number of experiences, some of which include teaching. More than one topic, I might add. And testing. I have been through tests, examinations, and challenges. I know what I've won, gained, lost, and failed.

But I've never had the need to say any details of which, out in public. It is my own race, and I'm running it. I've been helped, and I will always help. Many, very many here.... can say the same.

Can YOU? (directed to all, not one in particular. Well, in particular,,,, YOU!) :D

This is a spectrum. Is not black-and-white. Just because someone may exude confidence in a subject does not mean they do not know what they’re talking about. It’s like how if you ask people directly if they are a good driver most of them will say they are a good driver, when we all know less than half of people are good drivers LOL

It's why Darwin is so powerful and depending on what the subject is the strength of Darwin increases.

A blow hard at the range only exposes his own inadequacy.

    A politician harms us.

A soldier gets himself and everyone around him possibly killed.

Hopefully the overconfident, ignorant soldier spares the quiet, thinking guy that ends up saving the battle.

Another favorite example is the 20yr old college twat spouting how great Bernie and socialism is. They don’t even pay tuition but somehow know what to do with someone else’s money.....
