I came across this article from March this morning while perusing the web for info on different suppressors that left me with an unsettled feeling. After considering it for a while and running different scenarios through my mind I decided to share it with you guys and see if you came away from it with similar thoughts to mine, or others thoughts/concerns, I hadn't considered which I'd like to hear.
FFLs Claim Austin's Silencer Shop is Single-Handedly Crashing ATF's E-Forms System | The Truth About Guns
Full Disclosure: I have zero affiliation with Silencer Shop, any other shop/online entity, or the ATF outside of being a customer of all of the above.
My take:
So Silencer Shop figured out a way to make a shitty government program run more efficiently (yet still far from perfect) and instead of saying "wow, there's real potential for innovation and streamlining here" everyone including the ATF wants to bitch and complain. You'd think the ATF would be looking for every bit of help they can get because their system is so obviously flawed that guys like Silencer Shop are having to create work around solutions on their own time and dime.
Business and the Firearms Industry/Community in General:
Everyone is so scared that some innovative company might get a tiny slice of their pie while making their business lives easier, more profitable and the process easier on their customers that they are willing to not have the pie at all.
There's an old adage in the business world that is as true today as the day it was coined: Innovate or die.
The ATF is not in the innovation business. They are responsible for a whole lot of things and do a whole lot of things well but innovation, although their introduction of the eFile system flawed as it is shows they are at least trying, is not one of them. Anyone sitting around waiting for the ATF to supply them with a firm, well rounded, fully capable and permanent solution is going to be looking for something else to occupy their time before long, i.e. brick laying, lawn maintenance, applying for a job at Silencer Shop, etc.
