Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

I have one on a sporter, Brownells has Shilen barrels in stock, and happened to have the contour I needed, and I hate to wait. It shoots good. Shilen barrels have a considerable following in Bench Rest.

Good luck

+1 for Shilen. I've got one of their select stainless barrels and love it. Currently waiting on another from them. If you're local i suggest you go in and visit their shop. The first time I went in they were kind enough to walk me around and teach me the basics on their barrels.

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

Shilen barrels, along with most button rifle barrels, seem to have fallen from favor with cut-rifled barrels becoming more popular. But don't let that sway your decision. Shilen makes a fine barrel, just not currently the flavor of the month.

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

I have had several Shilen barrels. All were very accurate shooters. My latest build was with an Obermeyer, for no other reason that I have never had one. It shoots well too. +1 on going by their shop if you get the chance.

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

I had one that developed a void in the steel when lightly contoured. Quit using them then. That was years ago. I only use cut rifle barrels now. Bartlien, Krieger, Schneider.. JMO

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

Shilen barrel have more benchrest records and wins than all other barrel makers combined. Shilen barrels are dam fine barrels. Heck to be real honest, i am not so sure anyone is making any junk barrels. They all are pretty much equal in my mind. There is so much more to having a good shooting barrel than just who made it. The steel the barrel makers use play a big part in the quality as does the lapping process, and lets not forget the chamber job, or even the reamer that made the chamber. Oh, then there are bullets. Are we always sure we are using the best bullet seated at the best depth with the best powder with the right charge? Take a pic and stick with your pick. Sometimes there is knowledge to gain by shooting just one particular brand of barrel. After you shoot a couple shilen barrels you might start to see some hidden info on what that type of barrel likes or dislikes. Button barrels usually shoot best with a lot of jam, Cut barrels are a little more forgiving and some fellas find that they can back there bullets up a bit further with a cut barrel. At least in my sport. Good luck with the shilen. I think you will enjoy the heck out of it! Lee

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

I see that they're really big in the bench shooting world. Does anyone use them for tactical applications? Are their chambers too tight?

How good is good? My friend's stock Rem700 5R is a consistent 1/2-3/4 MOA gun.

Also, what is it about the barrel making process that makes cut barrels more forgiving than buttoned barrels?

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

Mine were sub 1/2 MOA shooters... good enough to be competitive in F-class/tactical etc. You will only get a "tight" BR style chamber if you ask for one.

Cut rifling doesn't put stress in the steel the way pulling a button through does. Quality barrel makers will relieve stress multiple times during the barrel making process. The "stress free" steel barrel makers use is not always free of stress.

Button rifled barrels have more than their fair share of world records... I don't feel the need personally to use a cut rifle barrel, but I wouldn't avoid them either.

Re: Thoughts on Shilen Barrels?

I bought a Shilen Select Match pre chambered 243 for my savage a few months ago. First thing I notice is that it has the finest finish I've seen on a barrel. It is not polished to a mirror finish, but you would be remiss to find a tooling mark on it anywhere. The crown is perfect.

After some break in and a little load development, I ran in to a problem. The damn thing is too fast. I'm having to back off of my loads to get the speed down under the 3100 f/s speed limit that is becoming standard fare in competitions. This is with 115 Dtacs and known loads.

This is my first Shilen, but I bet it won't be my last.
