I have a Tikka T3 Scout, with the factory 0 MOA rail/base installed. I just ordered a SWFA 5-20x50, and some Butler Creek flip ups.

The factory base sits kind of low on it, and I am looking for some input on which height rings I need to pick up for it. I have a Leupold scope with 40mm objective on it right now, with an el cheapo set of Weaver medium rings, and looking at that, I'm thinking that mediums just wont cut it with the 50 mm objective and caps. Anyone with firsthand experience with a similar setup care to chime in?

Thanks.

ETA: I searched all over the forum, and couldn't find an answer anywhere.

Re: Tikka t3 Scout/50mm Objective ring height

Picking rings for the Tikka Scout is deceptive because the OEM rail is very low and the built-in comb is really high. Anything under 1.00" on my Scout requires me to painfully mash my face into the comb to see through the optic.

I ran 1.00" rings even when I had a NF 32mm on it and have kept the same height up to 50mm bells.

Excellent. That was exactly the feedback I was looking for, and it confirmed what I was thinking. I'm just going with the 1" for now, and I've got a Triad stock pack I can throw on it if it ends up a little too high.

Thanks a lot.

Since we're all built different -- if you're buying rings local, I might recommend getting 2 sets of rings like 0.92" and 1.00" if they have them in resealable to new packaging.

Finger tighten the pair on your rifle and get into your shooting position to see if your eyes see through the center of both rings. Keep the ones that work and return the ones that don't.

Most gun stores are pretty cool and will let you bring your unloaded rifle in and do this if you ask them. Typically in this case, the counter rep will handle your rifle the entire time including finger tightening the rings on, only handing it to you to look thru, etc...

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought of just looking through the empty rings.

My LGS is great, the owner will let me walk behind the counter to peruse the rings and try them on if I want. He gets enough business from me, and some months I'm in there more than some of his employees....

Only problem is that they don't have a huge variety of rings, pretty much just a bunch of weavers. The only rifles/scopes that really sell down there are hunting rifles and nikon pro staff 3-9x40s, so that's basically all he stocks. I'm going to order the SWFA 1" ones, and go from there. If they aren't a perfect fit with or without the stock pack, I'll just run down to the LGS and try them there.
