Hello, I am pretty new to trying to shoot things over 200 yards and am putting together a rifle.

What I have now is a bone stock Tikka T3 Scout CTR that I purchased used with a Bushnell 10x40 Tactical up top.

I am looking to upgrade, in part for fun and in part to get more into shooting accurately (I know the gun should be accurate as is)

My thoughts at this point are to send the action in to hart and have one of their barrels with a muzzle brake put on along with a teflon coating. A nice stock or chassis system, however, I am not sure exactly what the benefits or drawbacks to the two different ideas are (I.E. stock vs chassis system), the stocks I am looking at are the Manners T4 and McMillan A3 Adjustable. Caliber at this time is .308, but I am considering switching it to a 7mm-08 as I already have an M595 Stainless that I have had since I was 13 in that caliber that is a great shooter. What are your opinions and feel free to flame away if you must!

Re: Tikka T3 Scout CTR Build Need some help

I would not change barrel on the gun UNLESS is shoots poor.
Normally you get custom grade accuracy out of stock Tikka barrels so it sounds like wasted money really.

I would however certainly consider another stock/chassi system, and there is loads to choose from Whiskey 3, Mcree, XLR.

If I had more money I would consider another scope.
But certainly not another barrel.

If you wanna see my T3 and the accuracy I get out of it please have a look here:

? Why add a brake?

And still if you do, there is no need for a new barrel,

just have this one threaded and get sorted.

As for stocks/chassis and so on, unless one can get hold of a decent prized chassi, the manners stocks are great for T3 and I can tell you that the practical precision,

ie the one you manage to get from the rifle shooting it will be greatly improved with a better fitting stock.

Any ways do listen to Håkan, he does know a thing or two about T3:s.

I agree with Hakan the Tikka barrels are amazing straight out of the box. I wouldn't mess with it. My Tikka T3 .223 shoots crap ammo amazingly well and with match grade ammo I'm making clover leafs with ease. I would shoot the snot out of your Tikka factory barrel than re-barrel after it burns out. I went with the KRG Whiskey 3 chassis, I love it!

I won't be able to shoot photos of mine for awhile, but here are a few links of beautiful Tikka rifles in the KRG chassis system. In my opinion it's the best stock out there for the Tikka at the moment. Here are the two links-

Re: Tikka T3 Scout CTR Build Need some help

If you choose to rebarrel, ypu can find a used T3 and use it as a base gun to upgrade. Scout/CTR already has a nice heavy barrel, basically a budget version of the Tactical or a US version of Varmint in 308. I saw used T3 308 in gunbroker often at around 500

Totally agree. Scout should be capable of better accuracy than the shooter in most cases and I don't see much benefit from going to 7-08 from .308. If one must change it, I think something like 6.5x55 or 6.5-284 would at least give more benefits from the barrel swap. Even then, like someone said, why not use a regular T3 as a donor instead of a nice Scout.

Re: Tikka T3 Scout CTR Build Need some help

I would change the scope only and run the tikka like it is. Muzzle breaks are very noisy. .308 doesnt have sufficient recoil to justify needing a muzzle break if anything I would put a smith vortex flash suppressor on it to save night vision. I would change the optic and depending on the distance you want to shoot I would either run a 5-20x50 Trijicon Accupoint which is limited to only 60 moa internal adjustment with 1/4moa knobs or the 5-20x50 Super Sniper and there is supposed to be a special on them on black friday. I see no reason to rebarrel it my tikka shoots very well.

Re: Tikka T3 Scout CTR Build Need some help

Took it out to the range today and was able to do about 2.5 inch groups at 200 yards using Black Hills 168 grain BTHP Match

Not real pretty but this is the first time I have gone out to 200 yards so I will take it!

Re: Tikka T3 Scout CTR Build Need some help

Little bit of an update, took SWFA up on their black friday deal and should have a 5-20 SS HD here on friday. Also thinking about bedding the stock as it seems as flexible as a peice of elastic at the front and I noticed that when I removed it to adjust the trigger it is pretty much a wimpy plastic shell with some lackluster cross bracing. I will eventually go to a KRG but that is a few months away.

.
SO is that from 100 or 200? If 100 you may want to check some things.

Re: Tikka T3 Scout CTR Build Need some help

This weekend I shot some 168 hornady superperformance sst's at 100 and had three shot groups touching but it was raining so the target didn't make it home for pictures.
