To bed, or not to bed.......

Has anyone here skim bedded their Manners Mini-Chassis? I am currently in a discussion with a local smith about whether or not I should skim bed the chassis. What are your thoughts?


Rifle is a Rem. 700 .308 VSF. It is torqued to 65in.# on the front screw, and 57in.# on the rear screw. It is showing some paint wear on the receiver where it contacts the chassis.

I'm pretty sure Tom Manners has posted before, not to bed the mini chassis. Follow the instructions on the torque values, and shoot it. I know that one of the very best smiths I know on this site do not bed them, and his builds shoot 1/4 to 3/8 MOA.

I've got 3 in the mini chassis, the 2 that are not bedded show the same mark you speak of and shoot great. It had lots of vertical stringing until it "settled in" My newest rifle built by GA Precision was lug bedded in the chassis. Not something I asked for but I'm not worried about it, Probably can only help. I will be able to shoot it this weekend to test it out. Can't wait, and can't see GAP bedding it if it's a bad idea, I might be wrong but we'll see. (BTW- GAP didn't just bed it on their own without asking, it is a gun that was being built for someone else who requested it.)

What is this "settling in" you speak of? How long did it take to settle in?

I would shoot it and see what accuracy is like. If it is printing small groups then I wouldn't mess with it. If the accuracy has room for improvement then I would consider skim bedding.

I bolted mine up and the first five shots went into the .1 range at 100 yds.
