Guys - I want to catch a badger so I can display it in my office with my other animals. Anyone here have experience with trapping these? I've heard use a snare or live trap with a chicken as bait but have never caught one before.

I liked the live trap idea because you could catch them with no damage to the pelt or feet. I've heard they can get out of a leg hold if given enough time.

Large fur badger from back in the day.

Wait until after January...they get their best fur late because they spend most of the time underground where its a lot warmer than above.

They are very easy to catch...as they are not trap shy and are very bold. In fact they are a pain in the butt if you are trying to catch coyotes and fox as you will have to catch all of the badgers first!!! Use #3 longsprings or coil leg holds and you will be good to go. Just make standard dirthole sets....I've never had one pull out of a trap. Use a long chain and stake it deep with a 24" to 30" rebar stake. Bring a shovel to fill in the crater after the catch.

Re: To catch a Badger

Trapping a badger is just as hard as trapping a Wolverine, but it can be done.

A dirty hole set, goes as follows.
With desenting gloves on, take fresh meat an wrap chicken wire around a tree at least 3-4 times about 8-12" above the ground. All around the tree bury old style leg traps that are staked down or cabled. Cover them with leaves or very loose dirt. Pour fox piss all over the area, but not on the meat.

The badger will find all the traps an will remember were all are at, but,....it will be so intent on getting the meat (it can't remove from the tree), it will forget about the traps an where they are, then step on one an get caught. You will have to run the line 5-6 times a day, as it will chew off its leg after about 4 hrs.

The other way is a log trap, with a meat trigger. Build the trap 3ft X 3ft X 3ft high with a solid floor an top, otherwise it will dig out in about 2-4 hrs. Use the top as the falling door. Be very carefull with a trapped Badger, and especially a trapped Wolverine. Both can, an will kill you given the chance when trapped.

I've killed a number of Wolverines in Russia, Korea, Canada, an America, mainly because it was the first animal I ever meet, that was actively, hunting me.

Another method that will work is to use a 330 conibear body trap. Set the trap and with the safty latches secure, lay it on the ground and trace an impression of the trap in the dirt, then dig down about a foot at a 45 angle. Put your bait in the hole, secure the trap solid about 2" below the surface and remove the safty latches. You want the bait deep enough that he goes into the hole nose first and not just sticking a front foot in to get the bait.Be sure the trap is secure and staked down solid.

Use this set only in a remote area where there is no chance of catching dogs or house cats.

Re: To catch a Badger

Slightly off topic but I have a couple friends with pet badgers. As good as any lap dog I've seen. pretty cool. They got them as babies from my neighbor who shot the mother. He asked me if I wanted one and all I could envision was big ass holes in my yard so I passed.
