I'm taking my Savage 93R17 FVSS in to have the barrel threaded for one of my cans, and was wondering if I should have a little of the barrel chopped and recrowned while it's in there. Would I screw up the accuracy? Is there an optimum barrel length for 17HMR's? I really cant find anything on it.

Go 16" and don't look back. With a small cartridge like the 17HMR you lose next to nothing with a short barrel. With a suppressor attached it will be a joy to shoot and carry around.

Cut it to 17"

It's ironic.

All kidding aside (seriously, go w/ 17"...), having a factory barrel re-crowned is never really a bad idea. Factory crowns are usually not that good, so having a professional one done can help accuracy most of the time. How much or how little will vary. You may not even see a difference, but if accuracy gets worse, you should probably switch 'smiths...

Re: To Chop my 17's Barrel or Not???

Cut it. I went from 22" to 18" on my Marlin 917. It shoots better than when it was 22". I did have it recrowned and it is sweet to shoot with a can. All the info that I read said 18" was the optimum length. 16" will be compact though.

Re: To Chop my 17's Barrel or Not???

There is a company in utah called Bull berry barrels and they have done extensive research on the 17hmr. they have a list of velocities at different lengths. looks like 18in is the sweet spot for the lowest extreme spread without loosing any fps over the factory barrel length. No link sorry i couldn't get it to work

Wow i would be interested to see some before and after targets from those who cut there barrel down to 18". Please. Interesting subject.

Yep i have read that page and the info before, just wondering how it worked out for the people who chopped there barrels. I guess i don't see the info on that site saying anything about accuracy, just velocity. Wondering how it has worked out for people.
