While chalking up a new build, I've come to a crossroad.

Contemplating whether or not to have Surefire muzzlebrake/adapter install on a 308WIN.

I don't see owning a Surefire can anytime soon in CA being a civilian and all.

The plus(es) I see are the option of installing a can when I leave the state. The other is to stay on target a bit quicker for follow up shot.

The negative(s) I see are added noise/blast and adding to overall rifle length.

So whatcha fellas think?

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

Ran one on my wifes SPS-T 308win and it worked good. Not a lot of extra or noticable blast or sound directed backwards. Over-all a good brake.

Another one to consider is the basic Ops Inc offering if you don't plan on running a can but want something simple and effective. It's just not as taci-cool as the Surefire.

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

Do it! GAP just cut the barrel on my 5R Remington to 20" and fit/furnished the Surefire break. I did for my wife's use, but I really like it. It is loud, but very pleasant to shoot.
I wish Surefire could be convinced to offer a short "bloop tube"
which mounted like the Surefire suppressor. The break would still function, but the sound pressure would be pushed down range.
Cheers... Jim

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

I ran an Ops Inc brake on my AAC-SD and had problems with groups until I removed it. I have an LTR in .223 that came with the Surefire brake. Can't say it reduced recoil, after all it is a .223, at least it doesn't seem to affect its groups.

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

I have one on a FN spr 20" 308 I have it for the can. If i was not going to run the Surefire can, I would get a different break There is IMO much better breaks out there that you would be more happy with. That said if you do plan on using a Surefire can then do it. I LOVE my Surefire, I don't shoot it any more with out it on.

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

I've had a different type of brake on my 7 mag for years. It does reduce the felt recoil, but it also makes the noise for the shooter considerably worse. That's the only hunting gun I have that has a pair of earplugs permanently hanging from the sling swivel when I'm in the field, and that extra noise is why.

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

I had a Surefire brake installed on my .308 with the barrel cut to 21" about a year ago. I was amazed at the difference it made in cutting the recoil, I would recommend one without hesitation.

It does make it loud for the shooters next to you though!

Can you post a pic of that?

Re: To Surefire or not Surefire?

Ive got an OPS INC 12th model in 30 cal on my 308 and when shooting without the can I have never had a degrade in accuracy. I would send the rifle back to whoever you had thread it and have them recheck their work.
