How well can you load an internal magazine when using the Surgeon 591/R action? This would be for a standard BDL bottom metal, no plans for a DBM.

I am thinking of using one with in a WSM caliber. TIA.

I have a .308 built on a 591 action & Badger M4 bottom metal - no problems at all loading!!

I run a Surgeon 591 .308 in a Manners T5A with Badger M4 floorplate and there is no problem loading the rifle. Actually the anti bind rail on the left raceway makes it easier to load as a cartridge can't get jammed in their when trying to load fast. It's a great setup!!!

Thanks for the replies. Looks I will be buying a Surgeon for the next build. It will be a WSM caliber. I like the integrated pic rail, which makes it stiff on top despite a decent sized ejection port.

Double check with Surgeon and your builder.

I think the newest version of the M591 does not come with the internal feed rails at the bottom of the receiver. They have a funneled bottom for typical AICS and similar mags to position under the bolt.

You will need the original feed rail set up. They are going to make a limited number of those on each run or may can take a special order.

Just didn't want you to order one and then find out after the fact.

Good luck on your project. You will love the M591.

P.S.: You may also want to do some serious research regarding the WSM class cartidges running through their standard feed rails. Cover all your bases and make sure all components are spec'd to handle your ideas.

c1steve, In my opinion, if you plan on doing any tactical comps you might want a DBM. I have to top-load my Sako and when you get in a hurry because of time constraints, you will loose a little time. I did the Bash top-loading and was very frustrated with it. If you plan on just hunting or taget shooting, Top-loading is just fine.

Re: Top loading with Surgeon 591 and hinged floorplat?

C1Steve, Terry is correct about needing the proper action, before Surgeon changed to their new website there was a note on the old 591 page saying they were only making 50 actions per year (unless demand was higher) for a BDL 591 that would accept your choice of floorplate, magazine box, magazine spring, and follower setup vs DBM 591 action.

So chances are if you don't order directly from Surgeon (say Brownell's for instance) you will get a 591 set up for DBM bottom metal only (most popular choice). There is enough of a tolerance difference inside the two receivers to cause feeding issues if you want to run a floorplate and spec the wrong action.

Definitely call Surgeon before you buy they are extremely helpful, I checked their new website and they have added a bunch more information to their 591 (R,SS, and WSM) action page to help you pick the right action, but I would still call them.
