So reading all these posts about the 338 lapua got me in the mood to purchase one. I have narrowed it down to either the Sako TRG-42 or the DTA SRS. My question is to the owners or people who have shot these platforms. Could you please tell me your experiences both good and bad. Also maybe give me some details on your rigs. Ive been searching and doing a lot of reading on both systems and im just at a stand still.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

I've had a DTA and have a TRG. The Sako is a nicer in every way in my opinion. I hated the DTA stock and find the Sako very comfortable. DTA trigger is average, about like a factory Remington. The TRG trigger is the best out there if you like a 2 stage. I thought the DTA mags were crap, Sako has nice mags. The only thing the DTA has going for it is the ''cool'' factor of being able to change calibers easily.

If accuracy has anything to do with your choice... I bought my TRG, threw in some rounds I had laying around from a previous 338LM rifle, did a few sighting shots to get it on target, then shot this 5 shot group. See if anyone can post up a DTA that performs the same.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

I'd love to have a TRG to go along with my DTA, but I can only afford the one. I've seen many SRS's print groups like the one above, mine shoots fantastic, but I haven't shot it at paper but the first time when I sighted it in. But I can say it is extremely accurate and repeatable.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

Both are great rifles, but different. You should get an SRS if you want the versatility of switching a wide range of calibers, from .243WIN to .338LM. You should get a TRG if you're interested in a dedicated .338LM platform and want to spend a bit less. A complete .338LM SRS is going to run close to $5k while a TRG42 should save you about $1500.

When it comes to ergonomics, I prefer the balance and comfort of the SRS, and thought the TRG wasn't as comfortable to shoot, but that's totally a personal preference thing, so your mileage may vary.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

Two entirely different beasts. See if you can get behind both. Both will flat out shoot.

I shoot an SRS in multiple calibers, and like being able to keep everything the same (optics, position, etc) identical between calibers.

The TRG also feels nice, but I've become partial to my new DTA ergo's, so they feel good to me.

TRG is cheaper, DTA a little more flexible. Everyone I know with a TRG loves them.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

I was able to get behind a TRG and SRS before purchasing my SRS.

Like it has been stated above, both guns will flat out shoot. My SRS shoots sub 1/2 MOA.

The DTA fits me better; it balances better (not so front heavy which is a big bonus for positional shooting. It also hides its weight very well. To me when shouldered it feels much lighter than the TRG.); the monopod is excellent; the SRS is significantly shorter than the TRG; and I love having the ability to swap out calibers (major selling point of the SRS).

Both are great rifles and I do not hear much negative feedback for owners of either rifle.

I have never had an issue with my SRS. However, I saw a TRG owner have the rear portion of his TRG stock (the pistol grip to the butt stock) unexpectedly come completely off his TRG today at a local competition. There also was a DTA owner that caused a double feed in his SRS that required a screwdriver to fix at the competition today due to an operator error. The owner had placed a round in the chamber without locking the bolt down to cause the extractor to engage the loaded round. He then racked the bolt again and caused a round in the magazine to double feed and get stuck between the base of the chambered round and the barrel extension.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

I haven't shot a TRG, so can't compare. I like the ergonomics of DTA, the shortness of bullpups in general (while maintaining the full length of the barrel). Bullpup balance makes it both more maneuverable and lighter in perception. As everybody else has pointed out, support for multiple calibers is a big thing for DTA platforms.

I'd prefer if SRS came with an adjustable cheek piece, but it's manageable as-is. Hopefully an upgrade will be available to turn my current cheek-weld from "OK" to "perfect". This is subjective - others with bigger heads than mine (no pun intended

) stated that the SRS cheek-weld is perfect as is.

Sounds like user error. There are two socket cap screws that clamps the stock assembly tenon between the chassis retaining groove and a clamping plate. It must have been really loose for it to wriggle oft like that, and embarrassing!

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

You can't just fam-fire a TRG to appreciate it. You must make all the necessary stock and trigger adjustments to truly appreciate the ergonomics. Same with just about any high-end rifle I suppose.

What I did was buy a TRG based upon a good recommendation, and then make it fit me as a shooter. Disclaimer: Most other rifles will do the same I suppose.

Your TRG should shoot half-minute or less right out of the box.

Thats a good idea. If you can find a DTA to shoot, try it out. You will either love the platform or hate it. Really no in between. If you hate it then the choice is easy, TRG.

Like any great product, it sells it's self. You will most likely love it, buy it, and sell off a bunch of your other rifles in other calibers.

The SRS gives up nothing in accuracy, is much shorter, switches calibers, ultimately is cheaper if you shoot multiple calibers, and lastly the most underrated feature is the monopod.

The monopod is amazing! Makes prone shooting almost like cheating.

Euro Optics is about 3 hours from me so im going to be making a road trip up there. I know at the one local show in Harrisburg they had both there. So hopefully they will have both so i can get behind them.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

Nick beat me to it. But heres my a 5 shot group @ 195 yards from my load work up last summer. It was 105 degrees. The group at the top right was the best, I threw some in the middle group. And it was a 308.

    Re: TRG-42 or DTA SRS?

I have shot TRG's before and I'm a proud owner of a DTA SRS. I absolutely love the rifle and it's the most accurate rifle I have owned and I have owned a few. Nothing against the TRG it's a great rifle, but I wanted a multi caliber accurate laser and that's what I got. Get behind both if you can.
