Interested in getting into the tripod scene. I had my manners built with 2 sling studs up front so that I could mount a 1913 rail.

So if I put an atlas bt17 1913 rail up front can I just attach an anvil 30 to that rail? The anvil30 claims to attach to Picatinny rails as well as the dovetail mount.

I called manners and they said it should not be an issue with stock integrity, but I notice most people have their mounts way further in I’m assuming at the balance point of the rifle. Would having it out front result in poor experience? Would it be “better or worse” than just using a VYCE at the balance point. I like the idea of not using the vice since I can more easily swap between rifle and optics.

Thanks for any help, new to the tripod game and the options are extensive!

Running the tripod that far forward is going to be problematic for stability. You might want to consider something like the Area 419 Arcalock rail to go under the entire length of your handguard to direct attach to the Anvil with the RRS 1.5" dovetail, or just stick with the Vyce.

The new RRS Mounts, the Anvil 30 and the Pro Clamp work with A Pic Rail

On the top is the Dovetail Clamp, inside where the screw is the pic rail mount.

One clamp does both. As noted being that far forward will not be very stable, but it will work. You are better off with a full rail and mounting the tripod under the balance point.

Thanks guys, that’s what I was worried about. I’m just not sure I’m willing to put a full rail on the bottom of a hunting rifle I need to hold/shoot offhand. Seems super uncomfortable.

It's not much different than the handguard itself, but on a dedicated hunting rig, I'd probably stick to the Vyce unless you just really need to cut the weight.

You’re right the 419 rails do seem pretty decent as far as off hand comfort goes... and would be both lighter and cheaper than the VYCE mount. Thanks for your help I assumed they were a full length 1913 rail.

Appears the bottom of my manners mcs-TA is not flat but has a slight curvature to it. To the tune of around half an inch of space at the front action screw if using the sling studs or vice versa... seems like a dead end which is a shame since the Arca rails look like the ticket for what I wanted.

The site says they’re universal and are designed with Manners stocks in mind. Perhaps contacting them could alleviate any concerns you have about fitment

You could always use a couple t-nuts and fasten another short section of arca or picatinny rail. Find a flat spot a couple inches long closer to the rifles ballance point.
Another option is to use a bag on top of the tripod. A gamechanger or similar type of bag resting on the tripod apex or on an abel table is very stable. The rifle will be plenty steady but not fastened in place, sometimes thats a good thing.

@Jmcmath the most popular way the VYCE is used, is in its' quick release version. It has a dovetail on the bottom of it so you can still remove it and go back and forth as fast as if your rifle had a plate on it. I watched a competitor actually leave the vyce on his rifle during a stage and was able to click in/shoot, unclip/shoot, then clip back in and shoot more. In saying all of that, me personally i like the direct mounts for my shooting. If you have a Mini chassis installed in your manners we just made our plate for that available again.

How do I get a rail for a Manners with barricade mini chassis? I didn't see it on your website. Link? Thanks! Sounds like a great option.

Thanks for the reply! I do not have a mini chassis I have Mesa dbm which also appears to have too much curve at the action screw barricade to get mount a rail that way anyway...

In general I want the most efficient setup for backcountry hunting. I figured if I’m going to bring a tripod for a spotting scope why not be able to mount the rifle on it. Having a vyce constantly mounted seems cumbersome but I could have it on my pack in a convenient place. Perhaps the most efficient option is a picatinny rail mounted in front of the dbm
