I apologize for the uneducated question, but here it goes. Locally I am only able to shoot 500yds and on occasion I can make a 2+ hour trip for 1,000yd. Right now I strictly bench shoot my custom 300WM and 6.5CM.

What I am wondering is if shooting from a tripod may help me improve my general accuracy by throwing a little more instability in to the mix forcing me to focus on consistent fundamentals. Is that a rational thought or am I way off base?

Short answer yes but to me a tripod is used to make a stable position. You could also try using something like a ladder or bucket or what ever you have laying around and try building a stable platform off of it. Even if its just for dry fire. Get creative with it.
