I'm new to tripods; would having a stock with a wide, oblong forend like the McMillan A5 make the tripod more difficult to use? What do you think about the A5 vs A4 vs AICS AX (with RRS square adapter plate), vs other chassis with tubular hand guards?

Is one more stable than the other, or is it just a matter of picking the right saddle?

It wont matter, especially if youre using an adapter plate to directly attach to the tripod head. If youre using a HOG Saddle it wont matter either, as the HOG saddle is wide enough to accept most, if not all commercially available forends.

With clamp style saddles, rounded forends tend to have a little more difficulty staying level between shots than squared forends; its not drastic changes, but noticeable after a few shots with the higher recoil cartridges.
