Gunsmithing Truing threads bad for prefit barrels?

That is correct. Opening up the threads means that the prefit barrel you purchased will likely not fit if the thread tenon has been cut for a factory action internal thread diameter.

Most places will take 10 thousands or so to open up the threads. As a result, the tenon of the prefit will be too small.

You can also talk to the prefit manufacturer and ask if they can go with a bigger tenon, or alternatively, you can ship your action to them and they can fit a barrel for you.

There are other considerations, but most of the time, this is the case.

look around, because im pretty sure i recall someone making remage barrels with threads sized for "trued" 700 actions.

Thank's to all for the Info. I have a Remington action .220 Swift with a Sinclair barrel that I suspect was built in the early "80s that I have been debating rebuilding. Trying to determine if/what might have been done to the action, not sure where to start. This may require a totally new thread.

Relatively easy-peasy to figure out.
Pull the Sinclair barrel, and mike the thread OD.
1.0625 (1-1/16") is "standard". If it mikes substantially larger the receiver threads were recut oversize and replacement would need to be similar.

IMO slightly loose thread fit is fine- it's the receiver face and barrel shoulder being true that's most important. Too tight, isn't good either...
