where are good places to look for walnut shell or cob medium in like 50 pound bags ? iam thinking a feed store would be a good place to start, or a place like tractor supply.

any ideas

Re: tumbling media in bulk ??

Ive bought walnut media in bulk from petco before. Believe it or not it was a lot cheaper and they use it for reptile bedding.

One 8lb bag of walnut shells from the pet store has been in use at my house for over 5 years, I add Nu-finish car wax to it every so often

are you serious, car wax ? interesting iam going to try that tomorrow or when ever i get some bulk media

Re: tumbling media in bulk ??

I bought a 25 or 50 lb bag of corn cob cat litter from walmart i think. Works good in 308 but it gets stuck in anything smaller. Petsmart has the walnut bird/lizzard litter. Ever since I went with stainless media the corn cob is the only stuff I use anymore.

Re: tumbling media in bulk ??

I'll second the Nu-Finish car polish. I don't know of any perfect media that won't get into flash holes, but still comes out of .223 size cases easily. I think that is just the way it is.

Re: tumbling media in bulk ??

No, add the Nu-Finish to the walnut media in the tumbler and let it run for about a 1/2 hour, then add the brass, the Nu-Finish will coat the media, I let it all night, the next day I have clean shinny brass, at least on the outside.

Re: tumbling media in bulk ??

"i will go buy that nu finnish tomorrow, i bet that wax would possibly seal around the primer and around the neck as well.. ya think ?"

Occasionally.

Nu-Finish isn't a wax at all, it's an auto polish that works on paint and soft metals, same as many other polishes.

Most people keep adding polish when they don't need to. It turns the media black and the excess dry polish makes a lot of dust. All that's normally needed to "rejuvinate" polish is to add a couple ounces of mineral spirits, aka "oderless paint thinner", to the tumbler and let it run a few minutes before adding cases. The thinner loosens/softens the crusty polish and lets it keep working for a long time.

Personally, I don't care for a phony looking glittery shine on my cases. I add a few spoonsful of diatomaceous earth (the same cleaning powder that's used in toothpaste) to new media and my cases have a soft matt finish look exactly like factory new stuff after I tumble.

EDIT NOTE: I fully agree with Mr. Dtarget (below) that the 20/40 grit is the only way to go. It's much too fine to plug flash holes but works just as well as the larger sizes.

Just an FYI... your local sandblasting / abrasives supply warehouse will have what you are looking for... I pay about $8 per 50 lb bag...corncob or walnut. As a matter of fact I've even seen one of the local gunstore owners picking his up there... and reselling it for QUITE the profit...
