Bug is getting me to try something new. I'd like to get something for inbetween my .260 and 300WM. Use is just for banging steel/targets for fun. I was thinking something off a long action. I have a few hundred fresh Lapua 6.5x284 cases just sitting collecting dust and was thinking either doing a 6.5x284, but more so necking up to a straight .284. Since my 300WM is on a Savage, I could just get dies/bullets and a barrel for a caliber swap platform. Not married to this option, but just the one off the top of my head. The name of the game with this one is simple and fun, without a bunch of overhead in custom dies/brass/etc.

What would you guys recommend as a tweener cartridge?

Cheers,
Hawk

284, 280 or 280ai slides right in between 260 and 300wm nicely, though I'd argue there isn't much void between 260 and 300wm. As far as I'm concerned, it's hardly worth bothering with a 300 inside of 600-700 yards, and a 260 is very capable up to and beyond that point.

But, if you think you want or need something dead smack in between, the 284 and 280 are it.

I had the .260, got the 300 for my do it at any range hunting rifle, then ordered a heavy barrel to sling 230s way out since easier to see those splash. I don't get way way out often so no need for a 338, otherwise I would have skipped the 300 and go right to the 338.
