Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

Working at APA is great...most of the time. Sometimes though Jered makes me want to bang my head against the wall.

I was doing a little organizing around the shop and found this poor LR-308 in pieces in a box with a range certification card on top. I asked Jered WHY the rifle was taken apart and to whom it belonged. His response was that it was a "shop build" from several months ago. Of course my next question is then WHY isn't it put together and for sale???

Jered - "Because it wouldn't shoot."

Me - "Huh? The range cert card looks good to me."

He glanced at it and said, "That gun might shoot under our guaranty but I know we can make it better. I want to stick another barrel on it so go toss that barrel in the corner."

This is the range cert card:

Crap like this bugs me. I'd be thrilled with consistent accuracy like that but to Jered he always wants to make it "better". Maybe when he isn't looking I can sneak this box 'o parts into my car. LOL.

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

for years my employees used to give me shit about "not good enough" stuff. i know it can be frustrating to employees and accountants. but what a great thing to see still taking place. its a shame that major manufacturers in this country dont hold their people to this level of quality. I think most americans would pay the 10%-20% more for most products to know it was built right, in house in this country and that someone was standing behind the product.

I know what you mean. But look at the bright side, I have so many "scrap" barrels available that I don't even need to clean a barrel, I just change them out!

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

It's that uncompromising dedication to quality that sold me on APA. As a first time buyer of a custom rig, I was really cautious about taking the plunge. After talking to Jered for about an hour, I was positive I was in good hands and had nothing to worry about. The rifle APA did for me has shot 1.5" groups out at Ft Meade's 600 yard line with my handloads. You guys do great work.

And that my friend is why you have the job you do, because Jered keeps "making it better".

Cheers,

Doc

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

I hope you guys realize I was being a bit facetious. The reason I was an APA (and Patriot Arms) customer for the past five years was Jered, Dave and everyone here paying attention to the minute details. I'm blessed to now be working with guys I have long respected and called friends.

So, Jered's attitude towards perfection doesn't really bother me so much. I welcome it.

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

I'll take Jared's stance. That group sucks because at 100M it should be one ragged hole at closer to .250".
A .406" group is too close to .500" for excellent accuracy so that particular rifle's accuracy is unacceptable for a company that makes rifles that are known for 1/4MOA accuracy or .25" groups at 100M.
With that said, the barrel hits the corner, then the action is fully checked for correct specs to insure that it is perfect or as near perfect as Jared demands. Once that is deteremined, then a new barrel is attached, the rifle rebuilt, tested and if it doesn't pass, back to square one all over.

I can testify of the great worksmanship that consitutes Jered's APA. I had him build me a 260 Rem this past year and it is absolutely the most accurate rifle I ever have, or ever will, own in 20+ years of shooting. Just phenomenal. And what a great guy with top shelve staff. First class from the top down. I recommend them to anyone.

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

This thread interests me. I am in the final stages of waiting for my first full APA build.

It is going to be a 20" 308 I had built to be an all purpose rifle, with a #6 Broughton 5c 11 twist.

The fact that it is getting so close (should be within the next 10 days) is really making me ancy. Simply getting to the point that I cannot wait to get it to the range.

Come on Jered! LOL

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

Keep in mind the .406" rifle that started this thread was a gas gun.

It is a bit harder to get the same performance we expect from our bolt-actions in those gas operated guns. Oh, we can do it and the .406" groups were okay, but even on gas guns we're trying to hit that consistent .25" grouper. That is the measure of our dedication and that is why we won't let that .406" sucker out of the shop with our logo on it.

hydro556, your build is starting TODAY! Won't be long, bro.

Want me to post some teaser pictures of the process to share with the world??? Talk to ya soon.

Re: Unacceptable accuracy (or why Jered bugs me)

I'm already jonesing for my next APA build. I'm currently trying to decide if I want a 7wsm, an overhaul of my hunting rifle, or a gas gun. Repeat business says a lot about customer satisfaction.
