Unique Situation - Scope or Rifle

So, I am in a unique situation. I have been shooting at 350-400 yards more often with a setup that is definitely not quite ideal. A Remington 700 ADL .30-06 with Synthetic Stock and sporter barrel and a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12 BDC. However, I have been pleasantly surprised that with my first batch of reloads (175gr SMK with 44gr. IMR4895) I was connecting on 8-12" plates an upwards of 15 rounds without letting the barrel cool. However, I really want to get rid of the whole setup and move to a Tikka T3 Lite in .30-06, and eventually a better scope such as a Vortex 2.5-10x32. Now, would you recommend that I go with the scope first, and see if my rifle can outshoot me, then when the cash is saved, buy a new bolt gun - or buy the bolt gun first, and use the current scope? I have definitely found that I need parallax adjustment due to my poor eyesight (even at my age!)which I quickly found when shooting at the 315 yard plates, I had a hard time noticing the plate was even on a stand! I though the darn thing was sitting on higher ground! Any help you can offer would be great!

You have poor eyesight, and your scope is not meeting your optical needs. Another rifle in this situation would not help your accuracy.

(1) New scope first. Watch this video and #19 also THEN buy a scope.

(2) Perfect your reloading techniques. Read, read, read. Tailor the load to the rifle. Test, test, test.

(3) If you then think the sporter barrel is holding you back, nothing wrong with Remy 700 actions. Rebarrel the rifle, and have a custom accuracy job done on it. Remember even if you've read great things about Tikka, that does not mean another (new) factory rifle is going to be a problem solver. It is only a place to start.

Good Luck

I'll take a Tikka, any day of the week, over the Remington. So, I think you're heading in the right direction on the rifle. However, I would agree on getting the optic, first. Put it on the Remington and use it to improve while saving up for the Tikka. My .02

Going from a 700 to a Tikka,is a step backwards.

Vortex sucks ass.

Would you care to explain why that is. The 700 is no slouch but to say going from a 700 to a Tikka is a step backwards contradicts what I've heard about both rifles.

And I haven't heard to many bad things about Vortex. It main not be the best of the best but they certainly aren't at the low end either.

I'd love to rebarrel the 700, however - putting $500 worth of barrel work into a $350 action doesn't sit well on my pocketbook! Do you think replacing the cheap flimsy stock will provide noticeable increases in accuracy?

wk05, Manners aught to be a nice upgrade...

I like the T3's but is you have a Manners, you might look at blueprinting and new "decent" barrel as an upgrade later on instead of changing platforms. Unless you prefer Tikka.

BTDT, are you always so abrasive? If you'd like to share your opinion, please state it as an opinion & obide by Wheaton's law...

wk05...
I commend you for asking a smart question.
Determine what your goal in shooting is them pick and purchase a scope first.
It's sad and also funny when you see the less intelligent buy a good rifle then pose the question " I only have XXX left" OR " what's the best scope for 300 or 400 dollars".
You can do allot with your 30-06, is it bedded, have you accurized it (chamber, crown, bolt face), etc.

Nothing done to the rifle yet. I'd love to eventually get a Timney 517, and drop it in a Manners MCS-T and see how I can do with it! I believe I am either going to go with the Vortex 2.5-10X32 PST MRAD or the Viper HSLR 4-16x.

Also, what are your opinions on the Rem/Age Barrel System. It seems like a pretty cost effective and time effective way to rebarrel my .30-06?
