8/28/2011 UPDATE: Accuracy attained (for me, that is). Shot a few quality match ammos and came up with a .58 inch 50 yard 20 round group. This is including my "called misses".

With accuracy attained, painted me some "Ogre-Flage".

UPDATE: In an effort to gain some more consistency, thought I would do some trigger work and ease the trigger pull a bit. Upon casually glancing down the barrel channel, I noticed barrel rub marks, similar marks on the barrel, and realized that in fact the whole barrel was NOT free floated as I thought. So, step two will be squeezing more accuracy than I originally intended. But Jane shot so well, figured I owed it to her to gain the most out of her.

Well, USPS showed up yesterday and delivered some new goodies! I am very excited, although I am still waiting on my stock...

Looks good. Will post more once I get the stock in!

Interesting side note: I had fears for days that I would be fitting this barrel all morning. I figured it would be tight, needing antiseize and a deadblow hammer with a vise. I figured I would run a caliper on the barrel and receiver and see what happened. EXACTLY THE SAME DIMENSIONS! Now that does not happen very often, especially for me. Ran some fine wet/dry 600 just to clean up some build up gunk, slide in slick and tight (can we say "german virgin"! good'n'tight!!!)

Notes: KIDD barrel is extremely well machined. I am very pleased I went this route (so far). Will see if I am still as happy once I hit the range!

Re: Plain Jane 10/22 is getting some upgrades

Boyds Tacticool. Should have it Tuesday.

Still debating on camo painting receiver and stock...Any thoughts or pictures to persuade me one way or another?

Re: UPDATED! Plain Jane 10/22 is getting some upgrades

Stock arrived JUST AS I LEFT FOR VACATION! Damn you, UPS!

Anyhow, stock to receiver fit is german-virgin. Barrel is free floated the whole length down to the V-block.

My plans for tomorrow: Establish a base line for accuracy with a few different match ammos and some "so-so" ammos. This will let me know if what I have done so far is satisfactory for me, or if I need to further wring it out. Am thinking about these items:
*1: Bed receiver (either tape or actual bedding compound)
*2: Bed the barrel block/v-block. I have access to some wood working tools, so this should not be "that" hard...
*3: Bed the barrel up to 3" from receiver. Have differing reports as to whether KIDD barrels need this or not. Will see.

Also for the near future is a 3-tone camo job. I will likely leave the current finish as a layer. I am also going to play around with some marine-tex and give some "grip" to the stock. Yes kids, I will do this BEFORE I camo the stock.

Onto the pics:

And just because EVERYONE ELSE does it and I don't wanna be left out, the foot shot!

Re: UPDATED! Plain Jane 10/22 is getting some upgrades

Nothing to write home about today. It appears that my match ammo went towards shooting squeaks. Going to have to hide it I guess.

Tried out some CCI Minimags, Federal American Eagle, Aguila Eagle Match, Peters Target, and bulk Federal.

I can not tell how much better this shoots with just a barrel. I can not wait to get some more match ammo, but wont be for a week or two...dangit...

My toughest dilemma to deal with is a huge amount of failure to fires. At least 2 dozen from different brands. CCI had one, Federal had one, but Peters and Aguila had 10 or more each. I have no idea what is causing this. Head space??

Re: UPDATED! Plain Jane 10/22 is getting some upgrades

It could be bad firing pin strikes, pin needs to be pinned...have your bolt re done or get the Kidd....A worn mag could cause problems also....Try some SK or Wolf ammo..Its looking GOOD!

Re: UPDATED! Plain Jane 10/22 is getting some upgrades

Today was a far better day at the range for the rimfire (still need a name for her). Shot my last STS target with some Wolf Extra Match and boy is she a shooter. I am still working with shooting technique (something is off kilter since my accident and all my shooting is suffering...)

Anyhow, should score pretty good this go round!

Re: UPDATED! Plain Jane 10/22 is getting some upgrades

Definately a nice rimfire. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

And here lies the next problem:

Does that likely hurt accuracy? Dont know, but I will find out soon enough.

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

Well, first bedding job did not go as I would have liked. The barrel still rested FIRMLY on the front of the stock. After a little more sanding to try and clean it up that way, I decided I would remove old bedding and redo the bedding on it. This time I am using a little more tape for clearance on the front of the stock/barrel fit. Guess I will see what 3 hours brings, huh...

The wait continues. Again.

So, on the note of floating a KIDD barrel, what has anyone else noticed with their accuracy/floating. Is it detrimental to touch the stock half way up the barrel? OR does it matter?

Yes, I still have to do the trigger on it.

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

ogre... did you try it BEFORE floating? Completely free-floating a barrel isn't always the correct answer with a 10/22. Sometimes it isn't necessary and sometimes it is detrimental.

My 10/22 shoots extremely tight at 50 yards. (KIDD barrel in a Boyd's Tacticool.) In order for it to shoot tight I experimented with ammo and a peice of rubber band under the barrel. My final conclusion came up to Eley Match with the rubber band about 3" from the end of the stock forearm.

Here are the 50 yard results for mine all shot same day. Top 2 groups are 10 rounds and the rest are 5:

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

Oh, and some "Rico-Flage" for you... Krylon.

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

Rico, I did shoot it for accuracy with a couple different match ammos to establish a baseline. If accuracy falls, bedding will come out. I have read several reports that say KIDD barrels like to be bedded for a few inches, then floated. So, I am doing that.

Dig the "Rico-Flage". Going to do something very similar to mine. What colors did you use?

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

Apparently I can't leave $hit alone.
Got home from work and decided I needed a bit of texturing on the stock. Well, I decided a while ago, decided I was going to do it tonight after a LONG day in Booking.

Tape, two-part permatex epoxy, two latex gloves, and a little prep work. I did not want a really rough texture, just a little more than offered by the stock. When I shoot off hand, I sling up and only use about 6-8" of the fore end to grab onto, so that is why it is not as long as others do. Just my style.

Layed out tape, cleaned up the area, mixed up a bunch of epoxy, slathered on the front, and "handled" the wet epoxy with a gloved hand to just raise it a bit. Rinse, lather, repeat on the back.

And for those wondering, no, I have NOT touched the trigger. SQUIRREL!

Time for same "Ogre-Flage" (to steal a phrase, thanks Rico!) I am actually liking the grey with the tan. Might use the tan, grey and grab another shade of light brown, perhaps even sage green for the camo.

Re: UPDATED! Project Jane continues: Accuracy Quest

ogre, mine is just krylon just get the matte or "camo" colors and use a matte clear.

It is pretty darn easy to do... just spray yor base coat, add random patterns (I laid a couple layers of Blue Painters tape on a plastic cutting board and cut them with an X-acto), respray second color and add more patterns, etc.

I hate leaving stuff alone...

Re: UPDATED! 8/28/2011

KIDD barrel and other upgrades have shown REMARKABLE improvement on accuracy, and floating the barrel even more so.

Shot a few match grade ammos and some other "stuff", with decent results. If I could read wind better, I think that some of these may have actually improved.

Although the Aguila Match Rifle shot best group, unfortunately I had 3 rounds that would not fire. Turned them 90 degrees and tried again 3 times and no boom.

The Wolf Match Extra is a 15 round group. Seems to be the best and most consistent. Next step: PAINT (Interesting results for a first timer)

Re: UPDATED! 8/28/2011

^^ I like it... overlap some of the stickers after each coat and you'll get a different look.

Re: UPDATED! 8/28/2011

Thats the great thing... who cares!!! Do it as many times as you like until you get what you envision! Project looks great bro!
