i have a Gen I, 1-4 on a DD AR now and like it. I'm planning to build a 16 inch Grendel AR for hunting and range work. Thought of swapping the optic over, but if the second gen is that much better should I just go for it. I understand the FOV is about 20 feet greater on the new one plus more magnification. Any input is appreciated, or other options about that price.

The Gen II 1-6 is a great optic. I have used one for a few years in 3 gun and it's got great glass, power range, FOV and the JM-1 reticle is fast to use. Move the 1-4 to the Grendel and put the 1-6x on the DD.
I should have mentioned i have a heavier 18 inch Grendel that introduced me to the cartridge and it has a IOR 2.5 x 10 tactical scope on it. Around here, getting out to 500 yards is tough because most ranges are shorter and in KY no real good open land to shoot on. What Rob said about putting the new scope on the DD with it's JM-1 reticle makes sense.
