im upgradeing my 22 mag for my son to start hunting coyotes with me. he sees my custom rifle and wants one. i have a ruger all weather 77/22 mag with a volquartsen stainless barrel. im wondering if i can just change the sear or what i need to do so ther trigger is alittle better. also anyone know who has a good stock for this. the one on it now is laminate and has a amall crack. it will be getting bedded. id like to find similar quality as manners or mcmillan. without the wait time.

is there any other upgrades i need to think about?

Re: upgrading a 77/22mag

I put the VQ sear in mine and the trigger is great now. As for the stocks the only one I found was the VQ laminate, and it is a great stock. Very nice stock. Also if you want a bolt knob Mark at Short Action Customs does a great job on them for the 77/22. Here is what mine looks like

Re: upgrading a 77/22mag

I've had good luck with 3 VQ triggers in my 77/22's , as for barrels , I have never put on a custom . Came up with a great load for my Hornet and get great results with Winchester Supreme 22 Mag ammo .

I do free float the barrels that seems to bring them to life .

Re: upgrading a 77/22mag

I think the VQ sear upgrade is the cheapest and easiest upgrade for a 77/22 period. I have dropped them in 4 different rifles and have been extremely satisfied with all.
If this is going to be a hunting rifle and the laminate stock has a crack fix it with some epoxy and roll with it.

Re: upgrading a 77/22mag

do i need to have the vq sear installed by a gunsmith or can i install it. also anyone have a picture of a bedding job on these or is that overkill.

Re: upgrading a 77/22mag

Of the ones I have done they are drop in, no hand fitting required. That may have changed. If memory serves me correct you take the action out of the stock, push out 1 maybe 2 pins and put the new sear in. The last one I did had the directions in the package.
I believe bedding helps any rifle in a wood or synthetic stock. With a few exceptions such as the AI chassis etc....
You can find all the pics of 77/22 bedding jobs and anything else you can think of over on rim fire central dot com under the 77/22 section.
If it can be done to one they have done it with a pictorial how to.

Re: upgrading a 77/22mag

The sear is a very easy install, just follow the directions. As for bedding, I did not bed mine. In the pics mine has a VQ carbon fiber 17HMR barrel on it. I got a Lilja 22 mag barrel on it now. The Lilja barrel is a tack driver.
