I'm plan to start reloading. I've been considering a Dillon 550 kit from brian enos. But that's a lot of loot and I'm fighting the urge to buy everything right away. A co-worker is offering up a kit, but it seems like too much for used stuff.

RCBS Rock Chucker Press
RCBS Manual Case Trimmer
RCBS Case Cleaner
RCBS 505 Scale
RCBS Powder Measure
RCBS Hand Primer
Primer Tray
RCBS Bullet Puller
RCBS 5 Shell Holders
Quick-N-EZ Rotary Separator Kit
RCBS Case Lube Kit

Basically, it's a RCBS kit with a case trimmer and tumbler... but no manual.

I never kept tabs on used reloading equipment, so I don't have a feel for the market and how often these items pop up. I know its less than retail, but I planned on getting an ultrasonic cleaner anyway. Maybe a scale down the road. This would get me started w/ the addition of some dies.

Do you think it's worth picking up for around $300?
I'd wait it out, but don't wanna lose out.

Re: RCBS Kit, is it a deal?

That's basically the same RBCS gear I started with 30 years ago. I still use several other pieces, while others have been upgraded. I'm not that up on current prices, but the extras over a new kit add up - tumbler and trimmer could easily run $150 or more. Depends on how 'used' it is.

I always advise starters to hold off on the fancy progressives. There are lots of possible screw-ups to watch for when you're getting started and it's a lot harder to watch for all of them at the same time. If you move on to a progressive, you can still use most of the kit. I still use my original Rock Chucker. It's always handy to have a single stage no matter what else you have.

Re: RCBS Kit, is it a deal?

If it was $250, I'd jump on it. But at $300 it's a fair deal. Like OldTex says, "depends on how 'used it is'".

I just got the RCBS Supreme Master Kit for $269 which includes pretty much everything on your list except for the trimmer, puller, shell holders and separator kit. I also bought the aforementioned stuff separately which added some significant additional costs.

I wouldn't feel ripped off by any means by picking it up.

Re: RCBS Kit, is it a deal?

Thanks for the input guys. I tried to get him to 250 originally and he acted offended. Im supposed to look it over tonight and he might throw in some 45 dies. Since its local, I think ill pick it up. He says it hasnt been used much and the pic he showed me looked clean.

Thanks for the Redding link though. If ths rcbs kit doesn't look good, then I'm gonna look at the big boss kit or maybe a T-7. The t-7 seems like a great fit for me in the long term epecially w/ the group buy savings.

I don't want to crank them out, but i wouldn't mind the ability to speed things up when I get better.

Re: Used RCBS Kit, is it a deal?

Actually thats not a bad deal if it is in good shape. Look around at the pricing on the interent for used stuff. Everything is getting more and more expensive.

The basic kit that is 279.00 (on sale on the net)

doesn't include the following that this does.

case trimmer
tumbler
case/media separator
bullet puller
5 shell holders

Re: Used RCBS Kit, is it a deal?

Its a hell of a deal, anyone that says otherwise probably don't have enough experience to even give you any sound advice. If the deal falls through please PM me this guys contact info. I can buy it for $300 and make money selling it.

Alright, alright, message delivered.

I was hoping to hear a little affirmation and sounds like it should be perfect to get me started. I just didn't wanna hop on the first deal to come my way. I have a habit of doing that.

Bad news, I had to work over tonight and didn't make it over there.
Good news, will have some extra $ to throw toward the reloading supplies.

Thanks for the advice!

Re: Used RCBS Kit, is it a deal?

Picked up all the items yesterday. They were in good, not great shape like he was suggesting. He threw in some RCBS 9mm dies. But still wouldn't budge on the price.

I took a closer look at everything today and there's one thing I'm dissapointed about. The press has the Primer system on it, but only came with the small size priming lug. It's my understanding that this component is no longer made.

Do you think RCBS will provide a new one?
