I am in the market for a solid cleaning rod and have been reading and researching? I know that most makes different sizes for the various caliber rifles. I was wondering about using a relatively small rod for most applications. For example, getting a Boretech Bore Stix that is rated as the .243/6mm/.270 and using it for my 6mm as well as my 300WM. That way I don't have to spend as much money getting multiple rods. I believe they both take 8/32 threaded jags/brushes.

What do ya'll think? I know that having a rod for each category would be best, but don't want to spend that much right now.

I use a .22 rod for everything. The idea that a properly sized rod is better IS true because the rod will be stiffer than one of the same material and a lesser diameter... BUT I figure carbon fiber rods are stiff enough.

What I would consider more important is a bore guide thats a close fit to the rod itself.

I use a bore guide thats turned to accept Stoney Point Comparator inserts, so what ever side rod i use, the bore guide holds it as centered in the bore as possible.

The smaller rod will work as long as you have a good quality rod guide. Lucas guides are the best and he can size the insert to fit the smaller diameter rod to work with guides of different calibers. I use his guides exclusively for all my bolt rifles. They are a bit pricey but well worth the money considering what you have invested in your rifles.
