USMC MOS AM whats best to get plane or helo ?

In the USMC MOS job of AM whats the best plane or helo to get ? I know in helio you can move up to crew chief some day

faster to move up in rank? looking for Pro/cons for each?

I suspect there are more opportunities in the fixed wing world if you're thinking about life after the corps.

My younger brother was airframe and hydraulics on CH-53's but ended up being his units haz-mat guy by the time it was said and done. He got out and went to the Coast Guard and does Haz-mat and vessel inspection. In both cases the as assigned additional duties have ended up being more of his job than what the title implies.

UAVs. You can be an operator (enlisted fly them) or you can fix them. The job market is awesome in the civ world. Most jobs for maintainers start out 65-70 and over seas is like opening a pirate treasure chest. Promotions, well, lets put it this way, stupid fast. Not that thats good and all but if you're not a Sgt by the end of your enlistment you F'ed up. Most Sgts are selected or in zone (SSgt E-6) by 5 years. They also have really, really, really nice re-enlistment bonuses. I don't think you can choose though. You pick an area and you go where the Corps needs you. I do know we are very thin right now and need both operators and maintainers.

I will say this about the job though. Its not as cool as working on a F-18, Ch-56, or osprey. It is a job where you don't actually get to see the fruits of your labor like a manned AC would. I don't really want to go more in depth of what you do see due to OPSEC. It is fun though and you will deploy (I did 4 tours in my first enlistment). Research it if it sounds like something you want to do. You do have to have a higher GT score and the ability to obtain a secret clearance. If you get it you definitely will see me (if you do want this I can see what I can do. My Gunny knows the monitor rather well).

If you can get UAV stuff, you'll make some serious bank on the outside. If you're doing tech stuff, stay at the front of the curve. UAV all the way.

I was in helicopters. When I got out of the military (even with an A&P license) all the fixed wing people looked at me like I was a little green man that just jumped out of a flying saucer. There were no helicopter jobs around my area because the oil boom bust had gone down. Last one to leave Houston, turn out the lights.

I was in CH 43's but my dumb ass squandered time and paycheck after paycheck chasing local punani while I was statiopned in KMCAS back in the 80's. If I had done my A&P' as I was advised to do, I would have a cool job that I would be retired from. but NO, pussy, brews and pizza were all I lived for.
Get into it, and make it worthwhile. Don't do what I did and live for later in life's sea stories

Dam stichblade i was just about to leave base to get a drink to take a break from studying you just killed my motto plan.

But thank to all people responseding and keep them coming the more info i get the better. I wanted C130 but was told its hard to move up in that one. plus it was very hard to get now.

I always regretted enlisting in the Air Force instead of the Marines, I worked on KC135s, and when I got out, got my A&P, I started working on 707, 727, 737, DC-8, DC-9, at a place that puts bedrooms in them, I learned the Military looks good on paper, but I learned to be a aircraft mechanic in the real world, and the pay sucked, it still sucks unless your lucky enough to get on with SWA FedEx or UPS. Fixing things that fly is the most thankless career, you must be perfect all the time, nothing less is exceptible, and after 23 years graveyards weekends and holidays are still in my future, and you become an asshole to people who make mistakes, even family. Those are the bad things, good things include a liscene to learn, and the learning never stops, once something is mastered another set of problems begins that must be mastered, it never ends, I love the career Uncle Sam gave me, but it's not everyone.

Helos all the way. There is nothing like keeping a machine in the air that is not supposed to fly. When you get out though dont think you will get one of thoses $75,000 a year A&P jobs. Everybody wants experience and the last time I looked there were no experience stores to go out and buy some. Do a couple of tours in the corps become a crew chief get your A&P and on the side go out too your local airport and get a part time job for some general aviation experience on the side . That will help down the line. Ive been doing it for 15 years both fixed and rotor , rotor last 8 and I would have a hard time having to go back to fixed wings.

Also the CH-53E and soon CH-53K is the most powerful and fastest helicopter in the FREE world. You could have the opportunity to work on one.
