Hey guys,

Just finished a nice Tikka bolt for a customer. It has the TAC-6 fluting and is coated in Graphite Black Cerakote. Anybody recognize this!!

Thanks for checking it out.

Regards,
Paul

Man that is Sick!!! Can you let me know how MUCH this setup is and how long is the turnaround time? I'm thinking really hard on it now. Thanks!

Fluting for the Tikka bolts runs 95.00. A little more than Remington as the Tlkka is very tough and hard on tooling. Coating of the complete bolt runs 75.00. Turn around is about 7 to 10 days.

Thanks for the inquiry.

Paul

I picked the bolt up from the PO, this morning. My initial impression was "HOLY S&!^":D The pictures (neither Paul's, or mine) do his work justice. The fluting is amazingly precise and smooth. And the finish?... "Finer than hairs on a frog", as my great uncle used to say! When I first thought about doing this, I wondered if the end result would be worth the money. Now, with the finished product in hand, I can honestly say that it was worth every penny, if not more. I have to thank Paul for answering my questions and concerns, his amazing craftsmanship, as well as the speedy turnaround. He is a professional in every sense and an asset to this site, for sure.

One of Paul's photos from above, lightened up a little:

I also wanted to take this opportunity to show off the bolt shroud that I got, while Paul was working on the bolt, itself. I wanted to replace the OEM shroud with something more durable, while still maintaining the lines of the original bolt. I happened across an aluminum replacement while surfing Ebay one night. It's offered by Southern Ordnance Sales, out of Florida. So, when I got the bolt home, this morning, the first thing I did was to swap out the shroud (took about ten seconds). The black anodized finish is an almost perfect match to Paul's finish. As you can see, the shape of the shroud is just slightly different to the OEM part, but still keeps the same basic outline. The fit is perfect.

The shrouds, compared:

So, now I just have to endure the torturous wait until my stock is finished, in about July and this project will be complete. I have to thank Paul again for his great work and suggest that anybody who has been considering having him work on their bolt, but may be having reservations, to go for it. You won't be sorry.

Thanks again,

John

What stock are you going with? Sorry this is off topic, but I'm considering the tikka route as well for a lighter weight hunting rifle.

Looks very cool.

Aside from the appearance, is there a reason to flute bolts? How much weight reduction do you get?

Any reliability issues? I'd think that the extra space made in and around the bolt is a setup for debris to get stuck and cause problems.

Don't get me wrong, the cosmetic result is very cool. Just wondering about the practical side.

For me, it's part (majority) cosmetic and partly functional. The grooves will actually channel debris and ice so that they are less of an obstruction. I shoot in snow and ice quite a bit, so that is a consideration. But, yes, it looks cool.

I would also add, after playing with mine for a bit now, that the harmonics of the bolt seemed to have changed. Where, before, the bolt had more vibration, or a "ring" of sorts, it feels more solid, now when it's being cycled. Again, that's just my observation on my bolt and I don't know if others have felt the same thing. And, it's not really any sort of functional improvement. However, if it makes something feel better, then I'm all for it.

While removing weight is an advantage to some people, or for some builds, that was not my concern, here. I don't mind a little heavier rig, in most cases. If it shaves off a couple ounces, though, it's not all bad. They all add up.
