Which powder would you recommend for .338 Lapua Mag?
Brass-Lapua, Bullets .250 and .300 BTHP, Primers-Fed
Rifle-GAP build on M2008 and AICS CIP

Powders VihtaVuori N165, N170, N560, N570 or Retumbo?

Thanks

Re: VihtaVuori or Retumbo for .338 Lapua Mag

165 is kinda fast for both 250 and 300gr. I've had good luck with N560 with both but stick with N570 and Retumbo on the 300's and N560 on the 250's.
Right now I use N560 and H4831SC on my 250's and H1000 and N570 on my 300's. The Vhit is expensive and sometimes hard to find (for me) but it sure does perform.

I prefer Retumbo for the 300's as well. Vhit is great for lighter bullets, I use it with 140-175 gr 7mm bullets.

Re: VihtaVuori or Retumbo for .338 Lapua Mag

Viht 570 is a real supercharged powder, excellent for longer barrels to push the 300 grainers at top velocities. N165 will work with both the 250's and the 300's and although on the faster side is suitable for the application. I've not tried the N170 or N560 but I'm sure they'll do the job.

H1000 is excellent with the 300's but other options are Reloader 25 along with Retumbo.

+1 to n570 and H1000.

Also ramshot magnum, accurate mag pro, and if you have 26+ in barrel I would also try US 869.

Re: VihtaVuori or Retumbo for .338 Lapua Mag

+1 on what Sully says above.

I will add, recent tests with US869 show some promise with 300gr'ers and a 26" barrel. Ill be doing more tests with US869 soon.

I shoot the 250s, so can't help you out with the 300s, but out of my 6 year old TRG-42, I've had great luck with both VV-165 and VV-170. Softer recoil impulse with VV-170, but I don't really mind and I'm only 5'8".

I also like H-1000 and H-4831sc, but Retumbo is a stellar 338LM powder with the 300s.

If you can find VV-N570, or N-560, you might give them a try for a bit more energy.

VV powders are harder to find here in Miami and they're a bit more money, but they make great smokeless powders.

Anyone try the new Reloader 33 , they say it was formulated for the 338LM? I wonder if it was made for the 300 heavyweights or the lighter 250's?

Oooo, I have not heard this, that would be cool, and I was thinking the other day that the quick uprise of .338LM, maybe powders would be formulated for it!

Re: VihtaVuori or Retumbo for .338 Lapua Mag

I shot 10 rounds of N570 and 10 rounds of H1000, all loads at 90 grains. Velocities were almost identical for both powders pushing the 300 grain Berger loaded touching the lands and set off inside Lapua brass and fed GMM primers.

Velocity was right at 2725 average. Groups were not impressive at 300 yards ....about 1.5 moa. They were all stacked on each other at 100 yards though.

Slight pressure signs for both loads on once fired brass that was just neck sized. I see some extractor marks and extraction shine around the primers. I think it's from not setting the shoulder back .001 from the first load.

More time is needed and seating depths issues with this
Berger continue to puzzle me.
