I have been looking for good reviews on these new scopes, but have not had much luck on finding anything. So does anyone have any experience with these? I haven't even held one yet but am looking very seriously at getting one. I was looking at a Viper HD or the Leupold Kenai, because these are the most expensive spotters I can afford for now. I like that the Viper's eyepiece can be rotated flat like a straight scope. I also like the warranty and the rail on it. I have Vortex binos and several scopes and have been thoroughly impressed so far. Any word on these new HD spotters yet? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Viper HD spotter

I've got a Razor with both the 20-60 and fixed 30x milling reticle. My previous spotter was a bushy mildot unit. The Razor is a big step up in quality. The focus works great, the ranging reticle is excellent and the view at 60 is impressive. I had reservations about a fixed 30x milling reticle but, its a wide angle lens and doesn't hamper the scopes function in the least.

One of the reasons I picked Vortex was because they seem so well built. My binos have a nice smooth feel to all the adjustments. My viper riflescope has a good feel and the turrets on my viper HS rival my nightforce nxs. Im glad to hear the focus works well on yours and that the max magnification is still pleasing. Even though I'm looking at the Viper and not the Razor, Its good to know your scope works well.

Re: Viper HD spotter

I have a Viper HD 20-60x80 straight scope. It is a very good piece of glass. There are better out there, one of them being the Vortex Razor HD, but it's comparable to anything I've seen with a price tag up to about $1,500, including non-Prominar Kowas. It's not a Swaro, but it doesn't cost like one either...I like it better than the Kenai. The thing is built like a tank and the focus knobs are smooth and easy to operate. The quality of the glass is excellent. You can get better scopes if you pay twice the price or more, but really I think the difference in quality is not enough to justify the difference in price...just my opinion...but I think here there is a definite point of diminishing return. For $800 including eyepiece, it's going to be hard to beat.

What are the max distances you have used this successfully to resolve holes on paper?

Re: Viper HD spotter

just got the Viper HD in 65mm. Haven't had a chance to get out to the range with it yet but just a few looks from here at the house and it looks very impressive. Will report back more later.

I ended up getting the 20-60x80 with the angled piece and I love it! You can easily tell that it is well built and all the adjustments are smooth. I completely agree with everything you said, especially about the diminishing return. This scope is right at that point. For anyone considering one of the Viper HD spotters, just get it and you wont be disappointed. My dad liked my spotter so much he just order some viper HD binos. Im really excited to check them out as Im sure they will be great glass as well.

Re: Viper HD spotter

Jay and I got to play with on of the 85mm's (Razor HD)the other day with the milling reticle. I have to say that I was pretty impressed. Focus knobs are easy to manipulate and the adjustment is smooth. Color, clarity, and contrast, are very nice.

We brought it out at various times during the day to get a perspective in different lighting conditions and I found it performed very well throughout the different conditions we took the scope in. For the money IMHO I think it's a pretty solid buy.

I wish I could have knocked it around a little to see how it holds up, but i doubt that Vortex would have like to get it back in used condition.

For 1400 bucks not a bad buy at all.

Re: Viper HD spotter

Bought the 15-45x65 Viper HD. Have had it out deer hunting and have been able to judge some bucks at ~800-1200yds. For a bit over $500, I'd say it is a decent spotter. Clarity is pretty good at the lower half of the magnification ranges but isn't crystal clear at higher mag levels. Eye refief is good throughout the magnification range. The focus requires readjustment as you zoom.

Have not used it for spotting targets yet so have no data on impacts at various yardages.

Will the 30x milling reticle work on the viper also?

Re: Viper HD spotter

At our store we have had these on order since they came out, its like the first run on the PST. I think that reviews are scarce because the scopes are hard to come by so far. Specification wise they seem like a great value.

I'm guessing not?

Re: Viper HD spotter

Now that you all have bought them can we get some feedback on how they work on the range. My Nikon 14X45 field scope is a little lacking out to 500 yds and I am starting my search. I have heard some goood things about the Viper and want to look at one. The othr option is the KOWA 82mm body and 20X60 lens seperate buy for just under a grand. I want this to be my last spotter if you know what I am getting at. Having a hard time justifying the SWARO option.

Re: Viper HD spotter

Mine will be here tomorrow and I'm going to spend the next couple of months doing a extensive review over the next couple of months. I purchased the spotter as well as a camera adapter, digiscoping is one of objectives with this gear, thus I should be able to provide some good data.

Sorry I can't be more helpful at this time. But soon I will have some useful feedback for you.

Re: Viper HD spotter

Thanks I look forward to it. About a month ago I spent an hour at Cabellas in Phoenix looking through a number of them but it was not the best place to evaluate. I did note that I could see weel with my galsses on though.

no eye pieces will not crossover unfortunately.

Re: Viper HD spotter

Alright so I got everything in today and unpacked. Which was a 45-45x65 Viper HD, Vortex camera adapter kit, and a camera lens for digiscoping (Nikon 50mm f1.8 which was recommended by Vortex).

In the box with the scope body is the adjustable eye piece, Neoprene cover, and rubber lens caps. When I first picked up the scope it felt solid in my hand and is rather heavy. The rubber armor on the outside had a nice texture and made the scope easily gripped. The spotter also has a foot the protrudes from the scope that will function as a QD mount in some tripods, it also has threaded insert in the foot so it can be screwed directly onto most any tripod.

As I mentioned earlier I also purchased the camera adapter kit for this scope. Vortex offer two different attachment for this. One is for Point-n-Shoot type cameras the other is for SLR type cameras. I purchased the later to couple with my D3100. Now I will say I'm not super impressed with the system Vortex has devised for this but is does function. The adapter system offered by Vortex threads onto the end of your camera lens. I would much rather have the adapter utilize a F-mount type system. But enough about that.

The Neoprene cover that is provided will work but for my purposes I do not see it being anything useful. The cover itself provides a snug fit but in turn takes some doing to get on and off. It is also provided with caps that clip on either end of the cover and they seemed to function well but the cover as a whole did not work well with the camera adapter thus the cover was quickly thrown in the closet where it will stay. And the rubber lens caps will be utilized from this point forward.

As for the optical quality it seemed good but that phase of the testing will be done over the next couple days. So I hope this helps some of ya'll and I'll post more of the evalution as I get farther along with it.

One more picture for good measure (the entire kit assembled)

So I went out today and sent some time behind the scope and was impressed. The local reservoir is still low from the drought so I took off and was able to walk out on the dry lake bed which gave me a excellent area for evaluation. The area was rich with wildlife, fishing boats and all kinds of structure on the other side of the bay. Thus I was able to get a clear line of sight to thing from 100 meters away to over a km away. The scope offered edge to edge clarity, vivid colors w/ excellent contrast, and resolved images really well. I was able to make out details of a gull sized bird 600 meters away even with a kicking mirage. I wish is could have taken a few pictures but after getting out there I realized my SD card will still in computer at home. Thus not photo today but that should be corrected tomorrow.

Re: Viper HD spotter

Thanks keep us up to date. I would like to hear from someone who bought the 82MM Kowa and eye piece as they are close in price and I have seen a lot of KOWA's on the range with good reports. Still loking at the budget for the SWARO but I can get a lot of reloading done with the difference. My Nikon is good to about 300 yds unless high mirage.
