In the last 3 months I got to test a bunch of 1-4 and 1-6 scopes in the $400 to $800 price range and ended up liking the Burris MTAC the best. Vortex are good for their price but I don't like the reticle in their 1-4. I your just a plinker and have the time to use a (Mil Dot based) ranging reticle fine, and if you "need" uncapped turrets fine.
My usage must be more like henchman's, my criteria is fast acquisition of target, easy hold-over reticle, capped turrets...the way I'm using an AR (actually an HK416) I don't want uncapped turrets being inadvertently turned as the rifle is being bounced around on my vest and gear.
If I were a varmint hunter using a 20" AR a milling scope would be fine but I believe there are allot of "recreational" shooters that base their purchase on what looks cool not on their actual needs and purpose.
