Howdy, I'm looking for some help in comparing reticle and scope options. I'm pretty much set on the Razor GII 4.5-27 for my match rifle and this will be my first scope with a tree style reticle so I'm looking for some feedback to help make a decision.

    1. For a match rifle, give me an opinion on the difference between the EBR7-c and the Horus Tremor 3. I'm leaning EBR but never owned this style. I do think I want to keep the ability to hold under so I can rule out the H59. How will the two be different for shooting stages? (remember, new guy to tree reticles)

    2. Anyone able to explain the big price jump between the two? Is it royalty fees for Horus or is there some other big scope feature difference that I'm missing?

    3. Any other advice you have when comparing these two scopes? (if not answered in 2.)

I'm still a bit old school and have been using my trusty SWFA 5-20 which I love all this time. So this is a step up but also new reticle so new capabilities and I want to get it right and could use your help to determine if the price jump is too far beyond the point of diminishing return for me. Thanks in advance!

I'm 2.5 years into rifle/PRS pursuits after a lot of decades in other disciplines. My $0.02:
    • I have, and have had, a boxfull of Vortex scopes. The EBR-7C reticle in mils is my favorite; I currently have a Razor 4.5-27 and a Viper PST 5-25 with it as well as a Razor and a PST with the -2C. It's a matter of preference over the earlier -2C reticle. Nothing wrong with the -2C; I just like the small floating dot at higher magnification which just more or disappears into a crosshair at lower settings.
    • I use holdover quite a bit. Part of that is because I've had cataract surgery and cannot focus on the elevation turret clearly while I'm on the gun, especially when the turret is backlit. This has been mitigated somewhat by addition of one of those turret magnifiers.
    • I think I've used holdunder like once.
    • I have no experience with the Horus-3 reticle but it looks very, very "busy." Even with experience, would a shooter have time to figure out which of those zillions of dots to use while on the clock? Rhetorical question - again, I have no experience with the reticle but simpler can be better while the clock is running. For me, at this stage of my development as a match participant, the EBR-7C (and older -2C) reticles strike a balance between simple and "full-featured."
    • Not sure why Horus demands a royalty or why anyone would pay it with so many alternatives available, but again I haven't used it.

    1. The 7C will work great for PRS shooting. Plenty of holds and not overly cluttered.

    2. Horus gets a licensing fee when their reticle is used. That is the price difference.

    3. Get the 7C.

You guys rock, thanks. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I prefer the 7-c over the busier one and if that's the price difference, nevermind I'll go 7-c.
I'm slow to adapt to new stuff because I like making things work until I get good enough that the upgrade will improve me. I've been shooting matches for about 3 years with the trusty SWFA, I think I'm ready to upgrade and think it might actually improve my shooting a little bit.
Oh also, I've used hold under twice now with success on stages that had multiple distance targets. I agree with you guys it's rare but I like the ability to use it. I'm looking forward to trying out a tree reticle and upgrading my glass.

    Cheers!

Hold unders are not rare. They are sometimes the best way to shoot a stage and not worry about dialing and saving time. Try them more.

I dont shoot PRS but I have or have had the ebr7c, ebr7c, and milquad reticles. The milquad is nice on every power as the reticle is much thicker. The EBR2c is nice across the power range but gets thin around 10x and below. The EBR7C is only good at 18x and above. Once you start venturing much lower, the .2 and the .5 on that reticle ends up being a mess. In other words if you spend most of your time under 18x then you may want to reconsider the ebr7c and find a razor with the ebr2c reticle. If you stay on the higher side then the ebr7c is a nice reticle. Just giving another opinion

Never an issue with the 7C and I use is mostly from 12-15x At matches just like my 2C scopes. Can see the .2 and .5 marks fine.
