New to the forum and i hope this is worthy to be asked and dont get flamed for beating a dead horse. i just put a viper xl (30moa rail) in jail chambered in ca legal 50 dtc. it has a lightseeker scope on it so ill be looking to replace. I want to buy a scope once and be done , i dont plan to change it . i know both have great warranties with vortex having the edge. I will be doing plinking with this rifle and will stretch out its legs eventually but for now ill be going 600 and 1000 for the most part. My budget would be right around 2k on this hopefully with a set of rings. im open to buying new as long as the warranty transfers. If anyone has any advice or experience please chime in .

Re: vortex razor or NF for .50 DTC

I have a NF NXS 12-42x56 on my 50BMG Windrunner and have had absolutely ZERO issues with tracking, holding zero, or reliability. However if I were to do it again with a NF I would go with the 5.5-22x56 NXS because of more internal travel (100moa vs 45moa), and I'm rarely able to crank it up higher than ~25-30x due to mirage issues.

Re: vortex razor or NF for .50 DTC

I've owned both. My preference would be:

Precision shot placement, general plinking and ELR shooting - NXS

Tactical Matches - Razor

The NXS 5.5-22 and the Razor 5-20 HD are really only similar in the fact that they share magnification ranges and price point. In actual use they have very different personalities.

Razor is FFP, NXS is SFP. Razor has a thick, but sophisticated assortment of tactical reticles, while the NXS offers much simpler but thinner reticles. NXS is 10 mil/rev, Razor is 5.

Illumination on the Razor is more adjustable and more easily accessed, but it blocks access to the mag. ring.

The occular on the NXS turns when you move the mag ring (scope cap rotates with it) whereas the Razor is stationary.

Both are incredibly robust and mechanically sound with outstanding zero stop mechanisms. Both have very good glass with a slight edge going to the Razor but you have to compare them side by side to really notice.

The Razor gives more elevation, but you have to use more expensive 35mm rings to get it.

They really are apples and oranges, but both excellent fruit. It completely depends on your taste.

The zoom adjust via whole ocular rotating on a NXS will piss off pert quick esp if using BC scope caps

i sold my NXS to buy a razor, way better scope IMHO

I can't say that one is better at mirage than the other... I never got to test them back to back under the same conditions. Some of this stuff can be very subjective, hence my hesitation to give a solid opinion in this area.

I can say that no matter what scope I've used, when the mirage is bad it sucks and usually the best you can do is turn down the magnification.

Re: vortex razor or NF for .50 DTC

thanks for the reply's but now making the decision harder. like i mentioned im so new to all of this and learning everything as i go . from the read on ffp vs sfp it seems like i would want the sfp scope to keep the reticle the same through out magnifications. I was starting to lean towards the nxs but now going back to vortex. like i said it something i plan to learn on and want to do it one time. what is the advantage of a 30mm main tube vs 35 mm? looking to purchase sooner than later. also are either of these scopes in stock or do they take a while to get after you order?

Re: vortex razor or NF for .50 DTC

Both of those scopes are top notch scopes and will serve you very very well. I have not had any reason to call nightforce but have spoke with the folks at vortex and they are all very very nice people and super helpful. And their no bs warranty is also a very nice selling point! I think you could flip a coin, and pick your scope that way and be happy regardless, but I would really like to try a vortex razor forr extended amounts of time and see if I like it as much as I do already.

Re: vortex razor or NF for .50 DTC

i think i may give the razor a shot since its a ffp. which reticle would you guys use for my goals? plinking and target 100%

Re: vortex razor or NF for .50 DTC

just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the help as well as sport optics for the good deal on the nf and rings.

now i just put a ar-30 in 338 lapua in jail and may need something for it . i have a Lightseeker 30 6x-24x that i got when i purchased the viper xl that ill probably stick on it for now.

i need to start reloading as shooting these rounds is going to be expensive.
