I don't know where you are in SoCal, but wherever you are I highly recommend that you look through as many different spotters as you can personally before you part with your money. If that involves several hours' drive so be it - better to at least peek through a spotter before parting with your hard-earned cash rather than relying solely upon what others say and making a "blind" purchase that you may or may not be happy with.
If you ever go to
Angeles Shooting Range, there are a couple of guys that have Vortex Razor Spotting scopes. I'm sure that they would let you look through them if you asked politely. I've looked through one and while it is a nice scope with good image quality it doesn't compare to a big Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica, the Kowa Prominar 883/884, or my
Optolyth S80 HD Compact Spotting Scope. I have the 20-60X Variable and 30X Wide Angle MIL Reticle Eyepiece and will gladly let you play with them - they kick ass.
Also, if you're not opposed to buying a used or "demo" you should also consider check-out
